Power outlets always hot

I just realized that the 2 power outlets in my 2012 are always "hot" is this common or some kind of fluke.

Yea if you mean they have power to them, they either changed something with the 2012's or something is goofy with yours. Mine only have power with the ignition on.

 

I know in my 06' the ignition has to be one and the button has to be pushed in order for it to get power to it.

 

Yea same with my bed outlet as well, not sure if he's talking about that one or the ones inside.

I think he's talking about the 12v interior power outlets. If that's the case OP then someone did the 12v anytime mod for you already so be glad you just saved about 5min of your life from having to do that yourself. This is how they should come wired from the factory and the only time this is an inconvenience is if you have a radar detector or similar that runs on 12v power and you want it to turn off with the ignition.

 

Hot as in power on. I doubt anyone did a mod to the truck as it had 9 miles when i picked it up.

 

I saw that after I posted and figured it would be pretty unlikely for it to be modded. The only other possible explanation is a faulty relay from the factory. Your relay for this is always open so it's not interrupting the circuit the way it's supposed to. Most likely it won't cause any issues down the road because of how it's wired (failure causes it to work all the time rather than not work at all) so it's completely up to you if you want to take it into the dealer for warranty work. Are we 100% sure that ALL 12v outlets in the new trucks are supposed to be switched? I've had cars in the past that had one switched and the other constant. This was the best configuration IMO so that you had the best of all worlds and I'm not sure why other manufacturers don't follow suit other than switched outlets are dummy proof.

Mine aren't hot, when I turn off the ignition my gps asks if I want to continue on its internal battery.

 

Yeah on my 12 DCLB the power cuts off when the key is turned off.

 

Yeah, that's my vote too. In order to have the same thing I had to take down my lower kick panel, access the fuse block & pull it down to get the relay off of the back side, take it out of the fuse block, pry off the little cover to wedge a little piece of plastic into the connector and then reverse the whole order. To just luck out and get a truck that already did this would have saved all that effort.

 

Do you know where I can find the how to do this mod? I've been looking for it since I have a light that I need to flash when my truck is not on and I dont want to leave my keys in my truck to do that.

I would like it, but my goes off with the key on my 2012. When I put my bed plugs in, I pigtailed off for the cab for the GPS and cell phone. Now all 4 "extra" plugs are fused and "live" all the time. Been doing it for years in other vehicles. Never had a problem with a dead battery but I am careful with them. I also did the same with my Harley putting a LIVE plug in the tour pak. Comes in real handy.

Check the thread sticky at the top of the 2nd gen subforum because I think that's where I found it. 12v anytime mod or something. Plenty of mods in there to keep you busy.

 

When I first got my 2012 the outlets were only on when Turned the key on. So I installed an always powered one in the glove box. Just recently noticed my factory outlets have power all the time now. Must be a stuck relay too! I doubt I'll want to fix that lol.

 

I would be careful with a stuck relay. If it isn't making a good connection on the contacts ( high resistance ) it will act like a heater and could burn or melt. It would be better if you just hot wired around the relay contact, safer too.

 

If their relays failed it failed open so there's no connection. Nothing to worry about. The way these particular 12v outlet relays are set up is when the truck is on they open allowing the outlets to be on so that if they should fail it will leave the user with constant 12v rather than nothing at all.
