Preventative Maintenance

I was wondering if anyone with the knowledge would be kind enough create a list of preventative maintenance time frames such as...

OIL CHANGE- Every 3-5K

TRANSMISSION FLUSH- Every 60-100K

WHEEL BEARINGS-

SPARK PLUGS-

CLEAN MAF/THROTTLE BODY-
etc etc.

Im not sure if this has been done yet by any of our members but I know something like this would be of great help for those who either flat out dont know or are unsure of when these things are to be done.

 

Look at your service manual - Toyota put one together for you already.

Other then that grease your cam bolts otherwise you'll be cutting them out.

 

x2, crack the Owner's Manual for scheduled maintenance.

Stuff like brake pads, rotors, wheel bearings, cv joints and u-joints really depend on the driving conditions. Some may trash their bearings and cv's at 40k miles and some may make it to 140k miles before needing them replaced.

Cleaning the MAF sensor and throttle body is one of those things that the Owner's Manual does not address but should be done at the owner's discretion. If you feel the truck is maybe idling rough, slow to respond to the throttle, etc, you might want to start with cleaning those items. I'm at 70k miles now and have never cleaned either but probably will at some point in the near future.

Greasing your cam bolts... Is this something like "muffler bearings" or "Blinker fluid"? or is that something legitimate that I have never heard of before?

 

Legit. The cam bolts rust inside the LCA bushings and, over time, the only way to get them out is to cut them. Ask either of us how we figured that one out... This is caused by Toyota's inability to use either neverseize or grease from the factory.

 

Oh I got you. I was thinking of the bolts that hold the the retaining Caps over the Cam shafts.

But for real though. How does one go about greasing them? is this something that requires those bolts to be removed and then when replaced needs an alignment?

Sign up there with your truck. You can look up the owner's and service manuals in pdf, view your service history at dealerships, etc.

 

Yes, you'd need an alignment afterwards so it'd be best to do it right before a scheduled alignment. You can use a grease pen to mark everything before hand to make sure everything goes back together at least close to where it was.
