I've had several detectors over the years and I can say it has likely saved me a few tickets. But these were instances where I picked up the cop from miles away because he just left the gun on all the time and I had ample time to trim my speed.

Instant on, laser and photo radar come on so quickly unless you can react and slow down in about 0.5 seconds you are screwed with those. In those cases you pick up the guy in front of you getting nailed and you have time to slow down and blend in.

And again, if you are doing 10 over it gives you time to trim down to 5 over. If you're doing 30 over, well, pay up because it's obvious even with out being pinged.

And contrary to popular belief in almost all states radar detectors are legal, just it doesn't impress cops a lot when they are citing you for speeding to see it in your car.

Laser scramblers are also legal in most states, radar scramblers are illegal in all states (IIRC).
Again it's only to buy you that extra second to trim that 5 MPH, not 30.

Radar signals will still penetrate the housing and trigger detection. The only problem he will have there is sometimes sunlight triggers cheaper detectors.

I dropped the coin and have an Escort. Much better antenna design than the Valentine IMHO.

I also don't buy into the "Stick it up at the top of the windscreen" mounting either. Mine is approximately 1" off the dash, and I get plenty of warning.

The important part of driving with a detector is your tactics. You have to have traffic ahead of you get painted with radar so you can detect it. With current POP radar, if you're all alone out there, you're toast. Lasers cannot be used in motion, so it is a good idea to not accidently be exceeding the speed limit in areas they may be used.

Watch for aircraft and pacing vehicles as well...

I've gotten that a few times in my younger years it sucks for a few reasons, other than the fine.

    1. At least in Washington at the time I got my ticket the officers in the plane would pre-sign a set amount of tickets. This just doesn't seem right to me.

    2. It is prone to errors. Once they 'clocked' my '85 toyota, 33" tires, 4-banger non-regeared truck going uphill at 80 miles per hour. Anyone from washington its the NB I-5 section north of Longview across from the SB scale shack. That truck never saw 80 except down a mine shaft. I told the officer that was impossible, he replied he's chased "These trucks at 100+". I said if he can get my truck to 100 he can have it. He was not impressed and neither was the court.

Watch for the | V | V | V | V along side many roads those are distance markers (others can be used but these are somewhat common) used for clocking speed from the air. Or maybe paint the top of your truck a different color! :)

Yeah, you know, it really doesn't matter on what basis you get paid. You still need to put it into some kind of perspective. I am suspicious of your new claim of 1 hour vs old 2 hour per day, but the point remains that you're making $15/day... $105/week... $465/month... $5475/year. And that is if you're working *every* day, not taking weekends off or anything. A person full time employed making utah minimum wage is making $14500/year. A person full time employed making $15/hour is making $30000/year. Average US income is somewhere around $55000/year.

You can assume, given the different people here, that the average person here is making ten times as much as you. ALL have made the point that you got badly ripped off as a result of not caring about your money. From your perspective, someone who makes ten times as much as you can justify blowing a lot more on frivolous items than you can -- and yes, they can, yet everyone speaks from their own perspective and says that you're wasting your money. Those who can afford the waste say that it was a bad purchase. If you had researched it, you could have got it for $100 or less and still have $200. Also known as 2 weeks work!!!

The other thing to think about from this thread is that there is a general consensus that if you got a fair deal on it, it is still not a justifiable expense. Better to save up for college. Average income of full time employed with just highschool: $32000. With college: $57000.

Nice but Blend Mount are expensive. Check my signature for a mount that will cost around $2 and perform the same task.

I used them in the past. They were incredibly helpful. Technology has improved so much that I question how effective they are these days. Plus, I drive a truck - Tacoma - now, not a sports car, so I don't feel the need for excessive speed anymore. CB's are much more effective on highway driving anyway... and have more uses... and cost much less for a basic setup. :burnrubber:

I will say this on the topic of radar detectors... they are a tool. Nothing more and nothing less. Like ANY tool it won't do anything by itself. It takes a user knowing what it's capable of and using it properly to HELP with whatever task is at hand. It takes more than simply having it to make it work. I haven't had a ticket in over a decade since putting them in every car I own and you can ask everyone who knows me, I used to get TONS of tickets and I certainly haven't slowed down. I live in an area where the powers that be have realized that the more they decrease speed limits the more they can generate revenue. If you don't live in an area such as this just be patient... it's coming. There are stretches of two lane highway between fields (literally not a tree or man-made object to obstruct view for at least a mile in every direction) that once were 55mph that are now 45mph or even 40mph for NO reason other than to catch people speeding. They resurface the highway and then LOWER the speed limit. This makes NO sense to make the highway that's been 55mph for ever a safer roadway and then DECREASE the speed limit. They then park near it and just radar people to write tickets. If the speed limits were reasonable everywhere then radar detectors wouldn't really be necessary. But IMO our immersion into a nanny state keeps the radar (both detector & radar) business in the black.

My Valentine 1 is BANGARANG! I haven't gotten a ticket with it, but I try to ride with a lead dog about a football field ahead so he can warn me :D

Highly recommended- also learn what the prompts mean- some are just store's automatic doors, and others are different types of police radars.
