Anyone have any info on this engine? I've owned the 5.3L before and it was a great motor but I know nothing about the 4.8L. Any experiences, good, bad ugly?

That sucks, so it didn't get the brawn of the bigger 5.3L. My dad has the V6 in his work truck and I was actually surprised at how well it towed! I would have thought the V8 would do better but a Ranger isn't THAT much of a load...

I have been looking at a Silverado. The 4.8 and 5.3 are based on the same block with the same diameter pistons. The 5.3 has a longer stroke. The 4.8 is around 300 hp and the 5.3 is around 315 - just a little difference in hp and torque between the two. The 4.8 will tow 6.700 lbs with the right gears.

Thanks! It seems to avoid the 4.8L with the 3.23 gears because it won't tow to save it's own life. I guess it's alright with the 3.42 or 3.73 (if you can find that configuration).

Seems the biggest difference between the 4.8 and the 5.3 is everything Chevy put behind it (4 speed auto vs. 6 speed auto, 3.23 or 3.42 gears vs. 3.73 gears).

Great first post! So are you getting a Chevy or a Tacoma?

The 5.3 also has the active fuel management system which is supposed to improve fuel mileage.

Good luck finding the 4.8 with the 3.73 gears. It is rated to tow 6,700 lbs. Anyway it is a mythical creature. I was told at one Chevy place that the 3.73 gears are no longer available in the 4.8. Without the 3.73 gears, the 4.8 is useless as a tow vehicle. The Chevy dealerships were not at all helpful in getting me what I wanted - a vehicle rated to tow over 6,000 lbs.

I turned to a Tacoma. I have owned three Toyota trucks - 83 pickup, 88 4x4, and a 93 4Runner. I came here to research towing capability. I was impressed with what I saw in the towing threads.

I went to Toyota to get a Tacoma and ended up buying a Tundra last night. I was very impressed with the Tacoma, but the deals on the Tundra pushed its cost to below what I would have paid for a comparable Tacoma.
