Anyone use this HO alternator?

Fairly affordable. And at 170 amps. Can't really go wrong...

But problem is; he no speaky ta engly.

It's basically a rebuilt alternator which isn't bad Basically brand new

I know this because I've had to replace a alternator on my buddy's first gen we went to an auto parts store (napa)and they told us they don't sell new alternator what they do is just get rebuilt ones

If claim is correct/true then 170 amp at 1200 rpm is at least useable. There are others on eBay that I contacted while looking for a high amp alternator and many would not give the specs and the ones I did have answer gave the rated power being at an engine rpm of 6000!

Looks like they just modify a standard alternator. As suggested you might be able to get the same thing done locally maybe cheaper. The pully change is going to probably make it spin faster so you bring the power up quicker. Would just wonder about life span on it perhaps.

When looking around for mine I ended up doing the 130 amp Cadillac swap. Had a 60 amp on from the factory. Not doing winches, but did want more power for an audio system and maybe a few extra accessories. Many will cringe, but I went the junk yard route on mine and got the whole thing done for around $45 if I remember correctly.

Anyway, best of luck with it and at least a bump for you to get peoples experience on them.

I put one of these on my son's 3.4L 1998 Tacoma in December. So far so good!

It was slightly bigger and heavier than the stock OEM 60a but, it was not a problem. The pulley was the exact same size between the two.

P.S. I don't know the output on the new alternator but, before the lights were dimming with a Alpine PDX-5 600 Watt class D amp.

Now he is running the same PDX-5 and a old school Orion Extreme 800.4 800 Watt Class A/B amp with no dimming issues.

 

LC engineering makes a 160 amp one do the 5vz I believe. That where I would look first. Would you need to upgrade any wiring or stuff like that when you do the swap?

think it was a "mechman" rewind.
So maybe not the same business...
But this re-builder also a claimed/advertised a 170 amp unit.

I have yet to install it...
but I did have it tested...
and it was found to be rated less then claimed.

Mine peaked out at around 140(ish) amps @ 1200 rpm
and delivered an honest 120(ish) amps @ 900 rpm.

In my communication directly with a reputable business that rewinds these original denso alternators...

I was told... that 140 - 150(ish) amps were about the max that could be obtained... while still maintaining reliability.

That's taking into account that it was originally an 80 amp unit.

So don't be too surprised if the amp rating hype is not what is claimed.

Regardless... a 140 amp alternator should still be satisfactory for most uses.
One can only cross their fingers on the reliability factor.

Old ambulances have some really stout alternators, but would need some mods to fit a tacoma.

I don't like the pulley change idea. I think I would just modify a toyota alternator myself or just add a second battery. Adding a second battery would be more useful because you don't need high amperage charging all the time.

 

Wouldn't touch it.

For one thing, 4 gauge is not adequate for 170a.

It's too cheap.

I ran one of those that was 130 amp to replace a 70 amp on the 2.4l. It worked fine.

I'll look at LC Engineering like Malander recommended. I asked the idle amps and rpm's to get to 160a for their alt's. I'll see what they say. Cheers.

 

I'd trust LCE. They've been working Toyotas for a long time.
Back in the 90s I seriously considered a set of their headers, and even dropping one of their built 22RE's into my '94 when it started showing it's age at 200k... but I decided to upgrade to a Tundra.

And ya... the '03 Tundra absolutely was an upgrade from a '94 5-lug 22RE manual with no power anything except steering and brakes.
