I don't stomp on the gas from stops or jam on the brakes to stop. I do drive professionally and all starts and stops are like I have an egg under my foot.

I enjoy "driving" my truck but I drove the 13 MPG test tank pretty average. Nothing crazy, but not ultra careful with starts and stops either.

Seems to be a lot of math problems in this thread. After a fill-up, hit and zero you trip meter. On your next fill-up (you must fill the tank, not just drop in a couple of bucks) record the trip meter miles on your gas receipt, and zero the trip meter for you next run. Now to get MPG all you need to do is take miles and divide by gallons, which you got from you receipt. For Canadians trying to get L/100KM, do the same to record your KM. The math is litres divided by KM (with the decimal place moved 2 places). Example would be 45.62L / 3.735 (which would have been 373.5 KM on your trip meter), which would give you 12.22 l/100km.

    Fuel Tank Capacities:
    Full 80L ~ 21.13 gal
    3/4 60L ~ 15.85 gal
    1/2 45.5L ~ 12.01 gal
    1/4 30L ~ 7.9 gal
    Light 15L ~ 3.96 gal
    E-Line 11.3L ~ 2.98 gal

Sure it does. Weight is actually kind if irrelevant. All it does is make it take longer for the truck to accelerate. It's all in the power:weight ratio. The heavier the truck (all other things like tire size, gearing & FI remaining equal) means longer times at higher RPM under your chosen cruise MPH.

This is all assuming no unnecessary throttle movements.

No, your mpg's will continue to get worse since you are on TW. Aftermarket wheels, bigger tires, lift, and so on will kill it. Get off TW now! :D

Seriously though, mine was a bit less when I first got it. It did improve after some break in time but that was also about the same time as going from winter gas to summer so it was hard to tell. Over all as you can see on my Fuelly I'm averaging 19.2 on my 2011 DCSB TRD Sport 4x4. Was staying around 19.4 until I got the aftermarket wheels. But I drive about 10-11 miles one way to work. I just got an Ultra Gauge and based off my experience as mentioned before, the short trips will kill it. But I do drive very easy, drives my wife crazy. She gets impatient yet if I do drive aggressive or fast she gets nervous, I can't win.

Yeah. If I drove like I want to it would be bad. There are times when I wish there was a way to put on a bigger gas tank

Do you have a Fuelly account set up? If not go to the website set one up then post it to your sig if you want it displayed on here. There is a thread that tells how to do it. I can't really remember how right off.

And if you're not familiar with Fuelly, it's pretty simple. After filling up I text the miles/price per gallon/gallons used to fill up, to Fuelly and it calculates for you and posts it to your page. Some use smart phones with internet which I don't have right now/yet.

That will not change your MPG, it just means you have longer to go between fill-up's due to tank volume.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Plus your truck is new, after the break in period, it will go up slightly. I got anywhere between 12-15 during my break in period.

I just rolled over 3,000 on my 2012 DCSB Sport 4x4, so far averaging juust a hair over 20 mpgs, lowest I've got so far has been 18 mpg, that was on the first fill up.

I've been boosted since the day I took it off the dealer lot. My first tank I averaged 18.5 with a 50/50 mixed city to hwy driving. I just added a cap and my last tank of gas was 19.3 mpg onthe hwy. I'll admit that I I have drove it fairly easy because it has less then 600 miles on it, but I have been going into boost every now and then. How some people are getting 13-15mpgs is beyond me.

Um...... Yeah. I'm aware. Pretty sure everyone is. No offence, but thats overstating the obvious:cool:. I would like the ability to travel farther between fill ups.

The only way to know how much you used is to start with a full tank and then refill. You note the amt on the refill. That's how much you used. Divide the miles driven from the 1st fill up until the 2nd by the amt refilled.

when I had my 05 the best mileage I got was when I had 150,000 mi on the engine...my 2011 won't come close to what I was getting probably cause I have like 20,000 mi right now on odo so I'm my opinion mileage comes with age but I could be wrong

Just turning 1000 miles here...three tanks have been 19.4, 19.5 and 18.4 (the last one was after loading it up a couple of times with mulch and sand bags (working in the flower beds). My 2011 Tacoma consistently averaged 19+ mpg for the 17000 miles I had it.
Mileage is a combination of highway and city, mostly highway though.

With modern engines, engine breakin is largely a thing of the past. What you get off the lot might be lower in the first 500 miles or so (as I've heard from certified mechanics) but normalizes pretty quickly. Platinum plugs help to ensure that performance is maintained through 100K miles or so.

The big killers of MPGs are aftermarket modifications, driving habits, and cold temperatures. Ethanol blended fuels in the Northern states during winter also knock off MPG performance. As noted in this thread, maintaing an even foot, keeping the RPMs below 2000, slow starts and warmer climates/weather will help. Keeping the ride 'light' and free of weight clutter will help. Larger gas tanks will help you go farther, but also rob you of MPGs because of the heavier load. At some point, the tank size will cost you more.

V6 engines are not overly fuel savvy. The I4s are better, but in some years, only marginally. PreRunners normally get an MPG or two better than the 4x4 counter parts, but with bigger tires, the MPGs are lower than the standard 4x2s cruising with smaller wheels/tires. Unfortunately, the MPGs of the 4x2s are best, but IMHO, the look of the lower trucks is off. In the coming years, we'll see the I4s pick up in sales as gas prices become a dominant buying factor.

OP, why don't you take a leisurely Sunday drive.
Get out of town, fill up, find some country roads with few reasons to stop and go.
Drive 40-50 mph and keep your foot out of it.
Or Get on a (preferably flat) highway and keep it under 70.
60-65 mph would be better, again, slow acceleration.
    Keep under 2000 RPM's.
Put 100 miles on it and fill up again before getting back in town.
    Then Calculate your MPG.
Also consider investing in a ScanGauge or UltraGauge and set it to display Instant MPG and Avg MPG.
The Instant MPG display will make you want to take your foot right off the accelerator

I'm averaging 18.72 MPG over 38 fill-ups with mixed driving
2010 Access Cab TRD Sport 4x4 with 200 lb LEER Cap and a couple hundred pounds of other stuff.
Lowest tank was 15.49 MPG, best was 22.00 MPG.

Good luck, hope it improves for ya.

I've had my '12 DC for about a month. I mainly drive highway, about 50 miles a day. First couple of fill ups a got around 20.5 mpg. Third tank I got 19 mpg. Im around 1200 miles and just got 21 mpg.

No mechanical mods here. I think it all comes down to mods and driving style. If I were to put a more aggressive tire on the truck, more resistance=lower mileage. I agree the stock tires suck.

Good news is, the price of gas is falling. :)
