S&W M&P .40

So after a few searches i haven't found a thread in regards to this pistol itself. I did find several comparison threads and asking difference's between it and another PDW.

So what are everyones thoughts of the M&P .40??? Preferably owners of the weapon or those who have had a bit of time with it. I don't want somebodies personal opinion of another gun they really like, just this one!!!

I have held it and like the way it feels, it is also lefty compatible (thats me). I like having the long trigger pull and double action, much like the sig P229 i carry with at work sometimes.

I have seen that it can be converted to a 9mm with a new barrel and mags, another plus. Does that work well????

Does this have a trigger pull similar to the sig?
Is it durable?
What else should i know before purchase?
Can all the gun smart tacoma friends help me out?? (I'm sure you can)

Own one - love it. My M&P40 is my pistol that Ive been most accurate with, even with its stock sights (also own FNP9, FNP40, and LCR; and have previously owned G17, G23, and Kimber ultra carry 1911). After about 300rds my shoulder starts to hurt from the recoil, something that doesnt really happen with any of my other pistols.

People have complained about the lack of reset "feel" but its never been a problem for me. Pull is a little long but not bothersome. For me the medium backstrap is a little too small and the large is a little too big, so I just put the medium on there and called it good. Recoil is very manageable (as far as the shoulder pain - I do have some arthritis there so that may have something to do with it) and I can get back on target quicker than with either FNP that I own.

Now, all that being said, I did order the Apex tactical DCAEK, new aluminum trigger, failure resistant extractor, and a new S&W factory FCG to get rid of the mag lock. Also purchased 10-8 performance sights (front with brass bead) and need to get them installed. *I only wanted to get the sights but since I heard nothing but great things about all the Apex items I figured Id try them out and see for myself - worst case scenario I can sell them later if I dont like them or it gives me an excuse to buy another M&P.

Only semi-major issue Ive heard of is a former Hawaii Sheriff that told me the take down tool in the grip kept sliding out "but it wasnt that big a deal because whenever I would put a mag in Id automatically shove the tool back into place". For that reason though he's gone back to glocks. They do sell replacement tools but I dont know if he ever tried it.

As far as the 9mm conversion - works great. S&W factory 9mm barrel (iirce it was $60 from midwayusa) and mags and Ive shot nothing but Jack ross ammo reloads without any issues at all.

 

Absolutely hate it. Just seems cheap to me. Granted, I shoot better with it, but that is totally due to the lighter trigger than the sig p226 DAK that I used to carry at work. We recently went to these in 9mm and I am not impressed. They have already had to send mine back to get new night sights. First time I fired it at night, the front sight was shot. You could barely see it. The interchangeable grips aint a bad idea, but I think they could have been done better. The trigger is shorter than the sig's DAK trigger(not sure how this compares to a non-DAK) and quite a bit lighter. The safety is too small and awkwardly situated for my thumbs. I have fairly large hands and large joints, so the itty bitty safety doesnt hardly work because of its location. I have to move my hand around a bit to be able to get my thumb on the safety or really stretch it out. Never forget your glasses when you shoot this gun. There are large gaps between the slide and frame that lets all kinds of crap come back at you. I have felt quite a bit come back and hit me in the forhead.

Where the sig is a solid workhorse of a pistol, if a bit chunky, the m&p is a cheap wannabe. Like I said, I shoot better with it due to the trigger, but I question it's longevity. I guess I will see soon enough. Once we start racking up the rounds like we have with our sigs, I'm thinking we are going to have quite a few more issues.

 

I had one long enough to put 500 rds through it. It was very comfortable for me to shoot. Just had that "good" feel in my hand. I also liked that it was a Glock knock-off and thus felt good about the reliability, never a malfunction for me. I sold it because of the trigger. It's like they made it from a plastic fork handle--just feels cheap. I believe they are 11.5lbs from the factory, and can be smithed down to about 7 or so.

So from my minimal experience as an owner, and based on what Country has to say as an experience M&P shooter, there's a good reason why they can be had new for $300.

 

New for $300? That sounds like a good deal, where at? I have found them for $500 but that's as low as I can find. Anyone know of some good sites to check, thanks for all your input guys, I really appreciate it!!

 

I've seen a few for sale on Glocktalk.com. Go figure. That being said I like my M&P. As a range toy.

 

I've got one in 9mm, love it. Sits next to my bed at night.

I put in the apex kit and it works great, really helped the trigger pull. I don't have too many rnds through it maybe 1000 and have had no problems.

 

m&p's are a great gun. i have the 9 and a 9c. the full size is my nightstand gun and the 9c is my carry gun. my brother just bought a m&p40 earlier this week and i got to shoot it yesterday. shot great, just like my 9's with just a bit more kick.

if i were you, i would try to find a gun range in you area that rents guns and hopefully they will have an m&p so you can give it a test run and see how you like it.

 

I have no experience with the .40. I have the full sized 9mm and the 9c. But I do like them and have had zero issues. I agree with moto, try and see if you can rent one and test it. Some people don't like the trigger pull. Its kind of a either you 'love it' or you 'absolutely hate' it thing.

 

Are you firing it next to your head? How is it possible to get stuff to blow back in your face when the "gaps" are on the sides? I have had 2 M&P's, both in .40, and I could not have been happier with them. The .40 Full size that I had, I put over 3000 rds through it, and only problem I ever had was a failure to feed due to dirty ammo. I am actually getting ready to purchase another one for my duty/daily carry weapon. I have no problem staking my life on the M&P. And I don't see how a M&P could be considered a "cheap wannabe," when it cost's about the same a Glocks, or Springfield's. And as far as the "wannabe" statement, I think that is just close mindedness. The trigger does take some getting used to, but I never had problems with it.

 

yeah? where at? the cheapest i found my m&p9 is $499.
