OR 4x4 or Sport 4x4 ??

Can someone explain to me the difference between the OR 4x4 and the Sport 4x4? It seems like the OR has different 4x4 features than the sport. I'm looking at the 2012s, and I don't understand the differences. One of them has A-Trac and or E-locker. If these are both only on the OR, what does the Sport have?

 

The sport has painted grill and bumpers, hood skewp, 17's, and I believe the shocks are different with the OR having a little stiffer ride. OR's have 16's. Also I just learned the on the 12's they added the 4 leaf pack on the sports/SR5 but not the OR. OR's have the Atrac and lockers as you have stated. Basically you trade function for looks and a smoother ride.

Do basically if I got a TRD OR and made the dealer put a sport hood on it, I would have the best Tacoma evar?

 

Sport has the 17" rims, sport suspension, and nifty looking hood scoop. Sport has the A-Trac but no Lockers. the OR has both A-Trac(i think) and lockers , off-road tuned suspension, and 16" rims. I have a 12 Sport 4x4 and i love it. im not sure if both packages come with the A-Trac but my sport has it.

If you plan on off roading allot. Go OR 4x4. If you want looks and a sporty look not so much off road, Sport. That's what I 've got!

 

Don't get too caught up in terminology, labels, or gadgets. The truth is the vast majority of people who fret about such things never really need the gadgets to begin with. The percentage of people who really need 'packages' is exceedingly slim, although people will swear up and down thry always use their locker to get out of 'tough situations' etc, or other such things.

IMO, a plain old 4x4 will suit most people fine. The people who actually do serious offroading upgrade all their components anyways. The shocks and such that toyota puts on the 'TRD' packages is rreally quite lame and it would never do for serious offroaders.

IMO, the entire generic 'TRD Offroad Package' thing is really more bark than bite and it's not the serious go-anywhere spec sheet people think it is.

So, I am saying it basically doesn't matter. Pick whatever TRD package you find most attractive. Do you like the 17 inch wheels or 16? Hood scoop or plain? Chrome bumper or color-keyed? Do you like a sticker that says Sport or OffRoad? If you do actually engage in serious offroading you will be swapping out the shock, wheels, and rims anyways and putting in your own upgrades.

 

No, Sport does not have A-Trac - it has Trac in High range 4x4 only, open diffs in 4x4 low range. Yellow wire mod will give you Trac in low range, still won't work as well as A-Trac but better than open diffs.

its your opinion. but i guess. You are the only person who needs to be happy with it. dont have buyers remorse.

 

Now I'm confused on the Atrac. I remember when I bought mine the OR's had some kind of extra traction control button on it that the sport didn't have. So that wasn't Atrac? Mine has 2 buttons, one with the slippery symbol off, and one that has the RSCA off. Are one of these 2 Atrac? If so then what was the one on the OR that I missed out on?

The OR has two buttons you don't have - A-Trac and Rear Diff Lock.

On your Sport the slippery symbol is activating the LSD function in 2wd with just a touch (throttle not regulated, power diverted to both rear wheels). Press and hold and it almost completely deactivates VSC and you go to open diffs.

RSCA turns your side curtain airbags off so they are not accidentally activated on a steep slope.

Ok, I forgot about the airbag thing. And so I was right though, no Atrac on mine. I was kinda confused when I bought mine to start with, partially due to different dealers not knowing what they were talking about. But I'm glad to have jogged my memory with this. Obviously I haven't wheeled my truck. Which is why I didn't feel the need for the OR anyway. But do like having the 4x4 for when needed.

 

My Sport 4x4 works perfect for my needs. Light off-roading, and use at some unimproved launch ramps for my Sea-Doos. Not really in the position to wheel my new truck that hard! I agree with the previous post about if you are going to really off road it, you will upgrade most things anyway. Personally, I liked the scooped hood and color matched grill, etc. Also, I needed a long bed, so that made my decision for me. (OR is not available in a LB)
