About to do Clutch.... 6M

So todays is the day, never done one before and have alot of how tos, none of them have words of wisdom or tips.... Any advice will be taken lol

 

09 seems too new to need a new clutch. What is the mileage? Did you not regear with the big wheels?

Replacing the clutch is labor intensive, but fairly simple. Remove the shift lever from above, unhook all wires, remove slave cylinder, remove driveshafts, loosen crossmember and all bolts from bell housing into engine, transmission jack or jury rigged floor jack with lumber/etc, remove all bolts, remove transmission. Take clutch off, put new clutch on, follow same steps in reverse.

 

Truck only has 31000 kms on it and no didnt regear, only put on 33's didnt think i would need to.

 

Even with 33's that seems way too low for a clutch. I ran my truck for 70,000kms with bigger tires and the clutch was great. Anyways good luck with the job, sounds fun!

 

Putting in a urd cc stage 4.... It will be fun . Also I got the truck pre-owned/ toyota certified BS.... im guessing the guy that owned it before didnt know how to drive a stick properly and took it in.... so thus the screwed clutch. Im getting my x warrenty refunded due to the last couple trips to the dealership were not p[leasent ones so eff em

 

Stage 4 racing clutch?
You realize that this is intended for forced induction (i.e., way more than TRD supercharger) and is going to have a SERIOUS *bad* effect on drivability?

What is the old clutch doing? Slipping under high torque?
When you remove the old one, check the manufacturer's logos on the pressure plate and disk, let us know if it is LUK or AISIN. My money's on LUK. The 5-speed has a notorious history with LUK clutches. They're total pieces of garbage and there are about a dozen TSB's for replacing with AISIN.

 

Yeah, stage 4 is a little much but ill try it, figured it would put up with the offroading and me at the same time. So got the transmission off, got the clutch in, then i called it a day. Tip of advice for anyone doing this, make sure you have a buddy helping or two if you can, and if your memory isnt the best mark where your bolts are comming from cause there are a shit tonn of bolts I learned yesterday that my arm bends half way up my forearm, getting at those bolts on top of bell housing was a real bitch to get. Oh old clutch was slipping going down the hwy or just starting off from light, looked at it yesterday and holy crap, that clutch was effed, hot spots all over the fly wheel and pressure plate. Guess thats why i gota new one lol. Ill cheack brand today. It is also a 6 spd that in working on.

 

Sounds like you need some lessons on how to drive a clutch.

 

I know im not bad at driving stick, just hard on it....

 

So 21 hours, 4 pizzas, 2 12 packs of brew, 2 6 packs of soda.... finished! Will I ever do again..no. Now as for the driving, i didnt do much as the truck is off the insurence but did go ripping around my area. Stage 4 clutch is not bad, its a little touch and go but very nice. Not to heavy like everyone was saying it was going to be if anything its lighter on the pedal... weird, and the URD short SHift kit.... OMG that is a long waited mod that needed to be done! If your thinking of it get it you wond regret it. Now all i need is to put the bumper on and ill be good!

 

You didnt answer what clutch came out of it.... LUK or AISIN?

Wow, that poor AISIN must have really been abused. You mentioned probably the previous owner's ineptitude, and probably why the mileage on a used truck is so low.

FYI: most of the so-called "aftermarket" clutch kits have an AISIN pressure plate, sometimes even the disk, which I believe includes URD.

Also, it wasnt about the clutch feeling heavier, but rather gripping harder. Probably easier to stall now if youre not gentle letting it out.

 

Yeah..... that is true need to learn how to drive my truck again, completly different truck, cant wait tohit the mud though will grip hard! as for $$$ save In this town I probly saved around 1000-1200 id say, would I recomend anybody to do this... no, but it was a learning experience. There is no worse feeling than when your about to turn the ignition after doing it, if its gonna make or break it. New one is aisin as well noticed that. Short shift kit, now anybody can do that... awsome.

 

No matter how many engines and transmissions i do, the worst part is turning the key over for the first time.

 

So OP... After experiencing your first clutch swap, what recommendations do you have?

 

Everyone should do a job like this at least once in their life. I've done a few and have lost my desire to do one again. Glad it worked out okay. The first one I did, I bent the clutch disk and got to do it all again.

 

Whats the biggest pain about this job? Time consuming?
