Truly hidden sub

Alright. I have just about tried everything. Taco tunes set up, Mr Marv set up, Scosche tacoma sub, but am looking for something a little trickier. Has anyone done subs under the front seats or even under the rear seats (in the flip up compartments or built into the seats)? Even a center console 6 incher or 8 incher would be nice.

I really like having the space behind my rear seats - hence the reason I keep throwing out anything I have put back there.

I have been searching high and low for some really creative set-ups but keep ending up with wooden MDF truck wedges in the back.

Have you checked out the SubXclosure Subs? Those still let you use the rear seats. they're also a vendor here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/subxclosures/

 

Thanks for the reply. They look like they do nice work but appears to be aimed at the access cab people. I have a double cab. I wonder if they have any trick set-ups for the DC.

I'm looking for something small, neat and tidy.

 

Build up a nice, tidy enclosure UNDER the truck with the speaker cut out in the floor pan. That's going to be about the most hidden set up you'll get.

Similar to having a blow-through enclosure from the bed. This is just an enclosure built and mounted below the cab area.

 

You know... I thought about doing that. Hmmm. With all the shallow mount subs out now, that would be nice.

 

I've seen them done many times. Just not many peeps out there willing to cut into the floor pan of their vehicle. I'm gonna have to take a look under my truck for empty area's that would be good enough for an enclosure.

Benefit is, you lose ZERO interior space.

 

have you seen jl's stealthbox? i don't really like it, but it seems to be up your alley. they advertise it for just access cabs, but it should work for both...

 

Yeah. But my exterior space would be less .

I would be all over cutting the floor out but I only have 8K on the clock so it's going to be a little tough to get out the sawzall.

Hi Jason. I did see the stealthbox for the extra cabs (the one that mounts in the center console) and thought it may work for the DC. The only difference I see in the DC, is that there are cupholders in the back. Maybe I'll give JL a buzz about that option. Their stuff is pretty pricey though.

Yeah. That one is nice too and I had a Mr. Marv box (taco tunes box before that) in that spot but I really like having that space back there.

The issues with going in the cubby hole are pretty big. First is the flat surface area. You don't have but 4" of verticle mounting space. If you put it facing up you are then under the seat and have to deal with the muffling of the sound as well as being too close to the bottom of the seat for the cone to have any appreciable excursion.

The same issues occur with going under the front seats (unless you cut the floor pan, which I think would be silly at this point).

You could do something in the front console under the dash. You'd have to get involved with a lot of fiberglass to make an enclosure, but I am sure you could pick up at least a cuft of airspace in there. You could also try something in the kickpanel areas of the same nature. Not sure if you could get 8s in there, but it would be worth a try.

The next option would be the rear doors. Make a fiberglass enclosure inside the door, cut the panel open and use an acoustic cloth cover to hide the cone.

 

If you are going to put some subs in the floor you need to know 2 things

1. You will lose some rigidity in the cab it WILL flex more I know someone who has done it to his F250.

2. DO NOT USE A SHALLOW MOUNT SUB unless you are going to build a sealed enclosure. They are made for sealed enclosures because of the pressure in the enclsoure is needed for their altered motor structure. You would want to use an infinite baffle sub with side walls and a breathable bottom that has heavy duty metal grill and maybe a speaker grill cloth to help keep out some of the moisture
