Toyota spec for towing capacity is 3500 for both the 2.4L and 2.7L. Shouldn't the 2.4 L have a less towing capacity?

I'm planning to buy a 18ft deep V boat and wondering if my 2.4L 4 banger can handle it.

I've pulled a 16ft bass boat before with no problem but wondering if 18ft deep V would be too much for my truck.

Have anyone here pulled an 18ft V boat with their 2.4L before? If so, was the truck struggling?

    Any suggestions would be apprectiated.

    Thank you.

how much does the boat weigh? Might be a lil bit much for ya. I tow my 19 foot boat with my V6 though. It is a jet boat that weighs about 2k with trailer and boat.

I think you could pull it... stopping may be another issue. Buy the boat and give it a go, if not they make six cyls. all day long. :D

I'm not sure exactly how much the boat weigh. But i'm guessing somewhere in the 2500-3000 lbs.

I towed my 3500 lb boat it is an 18ft Four Winns and it was slow and I felt bad for my tranny, but it did it. Granted I have the V6 with a tranny cooler and it still struggled a bit. I wouldn't recommend long trips with the boat, but you will be able to gauge it.

hmm, get you a CAI and exhaust system (exhaust systems are freakin expensive though!) and i bet money it would pull it no problem, but of course not all of us want to do that to our trucks, but thats a lil iffy pullin that size boat with the 2.4. 2.7 wouldnt do much better considerin it only has 8 more hp, but does have 17 more lb-ft of torque.

A boat that big needs a bigger truck than your four banger... I wouldnt try it. I had the same truck your talking about and I would have never hooked it to a 18 ft. boat.

You know all will be fine and dandy and your truck may pull it, but that one time your coming down a hill and you see the boat pass you up your gonna wish you had a bigger truck. It not usually an issue of whether the vehicle will take the trailer with the load down the road, the issue arises when you try and get her to stop and how much that trailer is going to push your truck around.

Also, do you have a standard cab or a reg cab? If you have a reg cab let me warn you about short wheel base trucks and towing. Its FLAT DANGEROUS. All it would take is a little puff of wind and your rig will be all over the road. My boat is a light lay up race hull and I have an extend cab v6 truck so I don't have much to worry about pulling my boat. I can pick it up my self without the motor in it. If it were heavier I might have a problem. If I were in your shoes I would be careful. At the VERY LEAST if you decide to tow with that truck then I would install some trailer brakes.

My father used to pull a small 5th wheel trailer with an '89 4x4 with the good old 22r engine. I don't know the specs on the thing but it was pushing the max rating of the truck. His only complaint was he had to drop to 3rd on some of the hills.

yeah you wont be fast but a trailer that heavy should always have electric brakes so braking shouldnt be an issue unless your like half the people I see towing with no lights-brakes hooked up... steams me cause If i rear end them probably still be considered my fault since I didnt allow room or whatever... I have towed a car trailer with 3200lb combined weight (car and trailer) behind my truck with no problems (elec brakes used)

It only takes one idiot to cut you off and your weekend is ruined. Is it worth the risk?

An idiot is an idiot, regardless what you're driving, tractor trailer or Tacoma.
