Bought my first dirtbike... Thoughts?

Hey all just bought a yamaha yz 250 2 stroke 1994 for 500$. Thing has all new plastics, shifts and rides great. Can keep up with my buddies 450r honda 07.


I need to change the fluids, and chain. Pads look ok. Any suggestions or thoughts about this kind of bike? I got this for a steal, guy is getting married and needs cash now! Will post pics this weekend.

them old 2 strokes are animals.. just keep it up to par on maiontence and should last another 10+ years.. got to love deals when the owner knows he is loseing money and ur gaining!!! congrats

 

Thanks man I am so excited. Ya I felt bad for him but he has had this bike since 1998. So he was ok that he lost money, he just needed it gone. The thing rips!

Trying to get a chain for it, any recommendation on what website sells best/cheapest dirtbike parts?

When that thing is at the top of it's game, it will beat your buddy's 450 4 stroke. Those 2 stroke engines are nasty!

When you say change the fluids, I'm assuming you mean just drain the gas/oil mix because it's old? If so, you might want to go through the carb if it's had old fuel sitting in there for an extended period of time.

 

Hehe, not so sure about the 250 vs 450 debate (rider makes all the difference).
I have one of each the 450 is surely faster, but I can corner faster on the 250 so pros and cons...I love both bikes though.

Change out the engine oil. drain the fuel and replace with fresh, pull the carb and clean the jets, mostly the pilot jet if necessary.

If its stock make sure you Grease the head set since the factory was stingey on grease there, also would be a good idea to regrease the rear suspension bushings/bearings, and grease the lip seals on the wheel spacers.

With fuel I run Motul 800 2 stroke oil at a ratio of 45:1, and use the highest available octane, 91+.

Then go join Thumpertalk Forum and start making your bike better, I am a member there and currently building a Desert race class, its a 2006 YZ250, with a big bore kit, Eric Gorr porting, a WR wide ratio transmission (yes it fits), and a bunch of other stuff....

Thats a good price for the bike, go throught the maintenance and you will have a strong runner.

Do you know how many hours it has on the top end? If not I would highly recommend changing out the piston and rings, it gets real expensive when the piston shatters and takes out the crank! Ask me how I know, lol..

some day, when you are old (probably 2x current age) you will have aches and pains in areas that bring back fond memories of riding high powered dirt bikes.

Wow. Increadible looking bike. Mine is pretty beat looking will put pics tommorow. Plan on restoring it to look exactly lile yours. I will do the greasing odf the head and will make sure to drain gas ool etc. Thanks for the info rep to you. Once again, awesome looking bike.

 

I didn't read any of the other post but you will mash the gas and you will flip the bike right over on yourself.

 

I've never owned a Yami, but have been around several of their smokers, and they are fast! A 250 2 stroke is the equivalent to a 450 4 stroke easy. If the environmentalists would get their sticky fingers out of dirt bike production with all their smog bs, the 2 stroke would still be dominating the motocross circuit.

 

Sounds like a good deal to me!! Try and get a service manual for it if you can find one so you can do all the required maintenance yourself and to at least get more familiar with your bike. I like to go to RockyMountianATVMC.com or Motosport.com for parts and gear. They both usually have good deals with fast shipping. Get some good safety gear, your life literally depends on it! Just this past weekend I dumped my bike going around a berm and if it wasnt for my MX boots, I would have snapped my ankle.
