That link is not my write up... this thread is... and I show photos of the parts in their bag with the numbers on the bag (because there are other parts that may or may not work).

Pretty much the whole job! An added bonus is performing the Spare Tire Mod (flipping it over so the fill stem is on the bottom for easy access to add air)!

Basic question from a new member:

Has anyone checked with a dealer about this mod?

Will it void the factory extended warranty if something should happen?

    Will they perform the mod?

Wow, not sure where you routed your hose but mine going to the gas door was nowhere near the spare being in the way and it was already flipped for access to air it up when the oem spare tire lock was added but yeah, sure, combine tasks if not already done.

    A) The dealer will just give you some bullshit danger story.

    B) Anything you do, including just driving the thing & having the dealer do all sched service on time will void your warranty in their eyes.

    C) The dealer will just overcharge you outrageously if they even consider doing it.

Save yourself a bunch of money and headaches and just do it yourself. Doing this to the back is no different than what they've done for the front differential from the factory.

Differential breather mod = should not void the warranty...

As long as the line is ran correctly, hose clamps are tight, breather is positioned correctly (in a spot that is protected), and the nipple is sealed to the diff.

Think of it this way... you are a lawyer and have to prove your case. If the line gets cut because you ran it in a wrong spot, and that caused water & dirt to get into the diff... then yeah you screwed it up.

The dealer will do whatever it can to blame you or say something you did caused it. It is your job to prove something they did caused it. So double and triple check these type of mods. Because if all you did was do this breather line, and the drain plug fell off while driving and smoked your diff (because the tech a$$hat was absent on diff. 101 day) the dealer will try and say you did it. But you have proof that they performed the service and YOU NEVER TOUCHED IT.

What event, or events, CAUSED the outcome...

Now the transmission breather mods are a totally different story. Higher value piece to replace and you have to modify the breathers directly on the tranny... uh yeah hard to prove your case on that one.

    Hope that gives some perspective.

We are putting on the back what Toyota puts on the front and should put on the back of any Off Road or 4WD Taco.

Just wrapped this mod up. Perfect write up.

I did tighten the union down pretty good. Looks like in some of your pics its about half way up the threads. Anything to be concerned about there?

With teflon tape wrapped and 'snugged-down', should be fine... If you did not use teflon tape, it probably would go in more. With the tape (multiple wraps), it doesn't need to be over-tightened to not leak. The last thing I wanted to do is snap the union in half by torquing the snot out of it!:D

Ok, I put about 2 wraps on it. Guess I'll leave it be. Thanks again for the write up. No more worries at crappy boat ramps for me.

Just did it. Great write up! Took longer to find the parts than to install it. Why does the new factory breather feel like it's going to trap more heat inside? It doesn't swivel like the old one...

You're going to have to help me understand what your saying...

Feel like? Trap heat inside? See my photos on page 1, do your old vent (not really a breather) and new breather, look the same as mine?

The breather is not made to 'cool' the diff., only to prevent pressure from building or now with the correct one, a vacuum from forming inside.

Yup, they look exactly the same. Just thought the new one would move like the old one. The new one seems pretty planted where it's at, while the old one would twist loosely. Not the same experience with yours? I'm probably over-thinking this...

Well the old one is just a one way vent, with a spring inside.... let's hot gasses out, but does NOT let (breathe) cool air back in (to equalize pressure/ break a vacuum). The new one (a true breather) is simply a capped fitting that lets air move in AND out of the differential. This must be located at the end of a tube, above any water line.

So the fact that it seems sealed tight shouldn't matter? Guess that's what I mean when I say it doesn't spin like the old one despite looking the same.Just drove around town and nothing exploded, so it's surely alright. ;)

Let us know how it goes... may be one of the easiest mods and it actually is good for the truck!
