put zip ties on the shafts, take them out to the desert, and see if you need re-valving or not.

 

Ya they need a rebuild forsure. Not a heavy leak but its there. What exactly does revalving do?

 

re-valving makes the compression and rebound actually work for your particular truck.

if the compression valving is too light in the shocks then you will bottom out everywhere, essentially making the shocks expensive paper weights. If the compression is too heavy then you're not utilizing all the travel and the ride will be super harsh, which is no bueno.

Rebound determines how fast your suspension springs back onto the ground after compression. With leaf spring set ups you want little to no rebound valving because leaf springs need all the help they can get to get the wheels back on the ground. A linked set up will need more rebound valving cuz they love to shoot back to the ground immediately and may be out of rhythm for the next whoop and have excessive strain on limit straps.

At the end of the day you want the valving to be as perfect as possible so your truck feels great through whatever terrain you like. Otherwise you might as well through some blocks back there with stock shocks.

 

Oh ok I see. That makes sence that I wouldnt want any excessive rebound. I guess ill have to try that trick with the zip ties to see how much shock travel is being used. Also, one of the shocks has very minor minor pitting. Can I still use them?

shaft pitting will result in the shock leaking each time the pitted section travels through the seals, as the pits will allow nitrogen and oil to leak out. Depending on how deep the pits are or where they are on the shaft (ie bottom, middle or top), you may not need to worry. New shafts are around $70 each. Do you have pictures?
