But the Matrix sucks too. And Scions are so hipster, and mostly driven by teens in high school. I hate every Scion, and I hate all current Toyota cars, I have driven most of them and they are like turds, sadly turds that will never stop running, but turds none the less. I would never buy one.

Go with the Tacoma, or come back with other options.

May I recommend a Hyundia Sonata, my mother and mother-in-law both have brand new 2011s, and they are getting 36 to 42 MPGs out of the non turbo version, and it is still fun to drive, and looks decent. The build quality has also come a long way.

I will also say I was in a similair situation, and I have about 20k to spend and I bought a used Tacoma for $16,500 +tax/tag/title and it had 97k miles on it, was a little scary, but it is a true Toyota (not a scion box), so I changed all the fluids, had it checked out by a mechanic, and a car building friend, and took it for a long test drive and crawled under it and looked at everything, and I am super happy. I would have loved a new car, but the one I got was in almost new condition, and it was half the price of a new one. Now I have money left over to mod it, and my car payments are less than $200 a month on it.

    Its a bicycle.
Its a comfy, easy to use box with tons of room, decent mileage and anawesome stereo.

I would not be afraid to own one again.

though I doubt I will. I intend to own a larger vehicle... next time I need to own one.

YOU WILL BE MISSED Satoshi Grill, FX-R retros, husky liners, bed bolt d-rings, TRD short throw shifter, 2.5 Fox Coil overs, AP UCA's, AP Expo rear leaf with Fox 2.0 shocks, Extended SS brake lines, AP kick-out sliders, 265/75/16 on Konig Countersteers, AllPro Apex front bumper and Zip Ties.
not even a fair comparison. Its all about what you need in a vehicle.

Agreed, I was given the choice of one of those and a Ford Focus at a rental place and told the guy I would walk to my hotel before I would get in the Scion... He laughed and gave me the keys to the Focus, not a great car either, but the Scion is...

I had a 2010 Kia Soul Exclaim just before the Tacoma, I needed a new car and had a budget under 20k, was the 5th one sold at the dealership, lots of looks and jokes from my buddies at work (military) about my toaster. But damn that thing had tons of options for under 18k and a killer warranty, probably would have kept it if I didnt need to move the dirt bike and street bike around, but gotta say my Taco still is my favorite.

LOL...love this thread. I sold my scion after buying my taco. I don't regret it, was a great car and I drove it for two years...then sold it for the same price I bought it for! Also, square roof rack was amazing for a roof rack. I've hauled all kinds of crap on mine...I wish I had kept it for the mpgs but alas, selling it purchased my flats boat for me =D.

    To come.
This is an interesting thread. I'm about to sell a 2008 XB to buy a Tacoma. And I have to say a few things given that I've driven my manual XB for over 3.5 years.

I've always liked Tacomas more, but at the time I bought my XB 1. I couldn't afford a Tacoma, 2. I was recovering from a bad economic stint and buying a new car financed by Toyota was a lot easier than buying a used car somewhere else. 3. I actually like the car too.

    1. The XB actually feels more expensive than it is.
    2. It's very spacious and comfortable inside. I'm a drummer, and I could easily carry all my gear and some guitar gear too.
    3. Yes, it's a 4 banger, and doesn't have torque under 2,000 RPM, but pushing the revs with a manual transmission and shifting at 4K is actually quite fun to drive. The manual tranny is butter al most feels like it shifts itself when the revs are high.
    4. Super reliable so far.

What's best? I paid $16,500 ($17,000?) 3.5 years ago and I can now sell it for $14,000 relatively easily.

So basically, in depreciation, I paid about $75 every month to drive it for last 3.5 years.

I don't regret the purchase one bit. Now that I'm better off economically, I can purchase my Tacoma and all is well.

My needs have changed. so much. since I bought and sold that scion.

Right now I'm craving a regular cab,2.7, 4x4. Manual if I have to. but I'd love an auto. just for daily driving laziness.

but again... I will not be owning a car again until fall 2012 at the earliest.

I may in fact not even purchase a taco from this generation.

i drove a ’05 xb allot before i got my taco. it’s ok but with that 1.5 I4 it was a little slow some times. the newer 2.4L is allot nicer!! mom drives the ’05 now. but it rides nice for size and all. i bet the newer ones ride even nicer! but my taco still rides better.

Being an owner of both a 2009 Scion xB and a 2010 Toyota Tacoma, I will agree the Tacoma rides better but you are comparing oranges to apples. I use my Scion for commuting and my truck for everything else. I am waiting to see if Toyota is going to release the A-BAT next year. I wouldn't mind having a second pickup...

    Too many to list now.
Hahaha I have BOTH! Does that count for anything? Needed a gas sipping family car after we got my truck so we bought the orange 2012 XB. I love it. Only thing is there is a lot of road noise inside the cab. Makes me want to coat it with sound deadener. Got 33 mpg on a road trip this weekend and hauled all of our stuff.

I've got both myself. Have never gotten over 27 MPG in my 2009 Scion xB and only average 22.7....
