I work as A/V on campus. Nothing really goes on over the summer, so I pretty much get paid to play on my laptop all day:cool:

How do I determine if it is one of the U joints?

Well I put the rear on jack stands and played with everything and can't find the noise... I even started it up and let it drive (that was kind of nerve racking haha) but couldn't reproduce the noise. Apparently it needs to be pushing the weight of the vehicle to make the noise.

Hey Monte, did your noise sound anything like this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=1r1xzF6ZJT4

I just listened to it some more after doing a kind of half assed carrier bearing drop with some nuts and washers (didn't help any) and my sound may sound like that but the noise doesn't start until about 10 to 15 mph, so it's a pretty steady sound by then. I'm going to just pull the driveline and check all the u joints now and see if any need replaced.

Any tricks to pulling it off besides marking it to line it back up right? I just unhook the bolts at the tranny and the diff right? Although I will probably have it off before you guys get on here. haha

I was right. haha. I must be the only one here that has Friday off or you all stayed up too late last night. Driveline is off and as far as I can tell the u joints all seem fine.

I took it for a drive in front wheel drive and the noise is completely gone. I think that would at least rule out the tranny, but since I couldn't reproduce the noise with the back wheels in the air, I don't think that tells me whether it is driveshaft or diff...

By doing it with the rear wheels in the air it takes 99% of the load off the drive line.

I'm willing to bet that you have a bad wheel bearing. if it was your diff you would have a noticeable clunk when shifting

But wouldn't the wheel bearing have still made noise when I was driving around with the rear driveshaft out?

grab the U joint and twist it. If there is any play in it at all..then that your problem. It'll sound like a high pitched loud as hell squeak. It'll start not so loud but as time goes on it'll get way loud. Then it'll go away..then come back even worse.

ill watch the vid later to see if thats the same sound.

But if the U joint wiggles even a tiny bit..you should replace it.

There is 0 play in the u joints. I even used a screw driver to put some force and them and they don't move at all.

People who only talk about them selves or turn everything into something about them annoy me.

Brady if I lived closer I'd come help you out but that's one hell of a drive.

Adam....fawk...just went for a run (its actually hot outside, im sweating like crazy now). 2 miles, which isn't that much to most runners but you know until 2.5 months ago I didnt run ever, at all. So im pleased with my progress and successful transition into bare foot shoes. I knew I was getting tired and winded at the end but i didn't realize it until I got back and started to take off my shoes and colors were blurring together that instead of slowing down at the end I picked up the pace and was really running, not like, jogging. The last half mile i was tired of dealing with my ear buds so i yanked em out and said screw it, im just going to finish and un knowingly picked up the pace and pounded it. yea

Blurring huh? likes like you need some more water, or food.

Here's the vid Adam. The diff is locked and the other wheel can't move, so I think it is actually play between the axles. The play between the driveshaft and the wheels is less than this.

Don't tell me that... :pout: haha

Edit: With it locked and both wheels on the ground there is about that same amount of play (maybe just a little less) in the driveshaft as well.
