The last time I had my oil change at the dealers, I gave them 6qts. mobil 1 advanced fuel Economy oil and a mobil one filter . The tec came out and told me I was .1 qts. short , so he put the remainder in . So when I got home and checked the dip stick it read over full like it always does. Just wish we had the right answer to this

OK , I just called up two Dealers and was told this.......

When they fill the oil they set their dispenser at 6.1 qts. and that's the amount that goes into your truck.. and thats what they recommend.

I put in 5.5qt every time and it's barely over the full mark... no problems, no worries. The dipstick is wrong but it's not so far off that engine damage will occur under normal driving conditions, just keep the level between the add and full marks. Most people here on TW are too meticulous to allow the level to get very far from the full mark. Likewise, allowing the oil level to go far below the low mark is asking for engine damage anyway.

At 30,000 miles change the oil and filter and added 5.5 quarts and the dipstick shows full in my 2011 Tacoma 2.7. It always showed overfull when taken to the dealer. I'm sticking with the 5.5 since .5 either way won't hurt. Why doesn't Toyoto Corp respond or issue a techical service bulletin?

I did my first change last Friday. 5 qt was about 1/8" over the low dot. 5.5 qt is right on the full dot.

My 09 v6's dipstick wasn't the same as my 2.7. The dots were much farther apart on the v6.

Say you knew how to work on vehicles. But you did not have a manual and you bought a used Tacoma. I believe most would use the dip stick to determine when the oil level was full when doing the first oil change for example.

If the 5 to 5.5 qts a lot of folk use was not enough, the roadsides would be littered with dead Tacoma's. 5.5 qt. gets me a bit above the full mark. Good enough for me.

Anti-drainback valve in the filter keeps oil in the engine's oil passages too

Still don't trust that dipstick do ya Gelo. ;) In the end a half qt. makes no difference at all unless your truck uses oil. Then you just need to keep a closer eye on it.

And also the counter balancers hold a lot of oil also, that does not drain completely unless you let it drip forever.

I did my first oil change at 5,000 miles (oil from the factory a far as I know) and decided to measure how much was drained. I poured it back into an empty 5 qt jug and was right around the 5 qt mark. This, with the residual in the oil filter, came out to around 5 qts.

    See here for my findings.

I'm starting to think that maybe not all 2nd gen 2.7 Tacomas come with the same oil sump. Perhaps Prerunners have slightly more oil capacity to compensate for greater climb angles?

Maybe this issue of possible overfilling with the 6.1 quarts is why there are tsb's for all these seals going bad on tacomas. It would make sense as overfilling can blow seals. I was curious after I've started to have an oil leak from the front of my engine as to what would cause this. Checked the pcv valve it seems fine shakes around like its supposed too. So when I checked my dipstick it's still way above the two fill dots. That was following the manuals recommendations. I can't even get an accurate reading seems to be so full. So from now on I'm going just a little over 5 quarts.
