Just did an extensive test on my truck and thought I'd share my results here since it's regarding fuel economy. I just bought my truck 3 weeks ago, so I wanted to do a comparison with the mods I had lined up. I have kept a consistent driving style (light foot, rarely shifting past 2000 RPM, gradual braking) with 50% city 50% highway driving through 4 tanks of gas. All fuel has been purchased from Shell. Here are my results.

2010 DCSB 4x4 SR5 package with towing package. 1 tank = full (no top-off) to within 5 miles of fuel light coming on.

Tank 1: Bone stock truck on 16" TRD Off-Road wheels with 245/75/16 Dunlop Grandtrek tires (stock), 87 octane regular unleaded fuel = 19.1 mpg average.

Tank 2: 2.25" lift in front, stock rear suspension, 33" tires, Ultra Type 164 wheels 16x8, 87 octane regular unleaded fuel, stock air intake and exhaust = 13.9 mpg average.

Tank 3: Same mods and fuel as Tank 2 + K&N drop in filter and Gibson cat-back = 16.4 mpg average.

Tank 4: Same mods as Tank 3 but filled up with 91 octance Premium unleaded fuel = 18.6 mpg average.

Just my results...I'm VERY happy with paying Premium and getting almost stock mpg.

Yes that makes sense, the only thing changing is weight. But full vs empty changes the total weight by around 3%.

Workman always gets 20mpg, usually around 22mpg. He uses Non ETHANOL gas, and drives like a grandpa, therefore reducing his chances of getting pulled over. Workman hates talking to unknown officers.

I did average 24.1 mpg ONCE using ethanol fuel. I was forced to drive 50-55 mph on Highway 1 in California due to a lot of traffic. If you add the benefit of non-ethanol fuel, keep your truck in tip top running condition, avoid city traffic (freeway only), avoid headwinds & mountains, remove non-essential weight from your truck, & keep your speed at or near 50 mph then I guess that it could be possible get near 30 mpg. It would be extremely tough to constantly average 30 mpg though.

Is there a page on here that shows best ever mpg for a single tank of gas?

Coasting to a stop in neutral with a modern manual (and in some instances automatic) transmission might not actually save you as much gas as keeping it in gear. Many modern engine management systems sense deceleration and negative load while the car is in gear and cut off fuel from the injectors, allowing the turning drive shaft to keep the engine going. Shifting into neutral while decelerating means the system has to keep the engine running with gas.

Just got 22.5 mpg overall driving cross-country from California to Philly. I have a '12 TRD OR 4x4 AC (4.0L automatic). I kept it at the speed limit and didn't use cruise on the hills. Best tank on the trip I got was 23.9...worst tank was 19.5. I also have a cover on the bed (Bakflip).

I've done the impossible, I managed to get 9.1 L/100km (25.8 mpg) with my '05 DCLB on my last 160 km (100 mile) trip.
    Here's my secret:

    Watching the Scangauge constantly.
Driving rather slow, like 90 km/h (56 mph) or less most of the time.
Slowing right down on the hills, keeping the Scangauge below 10 L/100km on going up the hills.
Nothing in the truck but me.
    Leer cap on the bed.
Michelin 245/75 R16 Latitude Tour tires on alloy rims.
    32 psi front & rear (I think).
My trip was at night on a very quiet road so I wasn't getting in anyone's way.

So it is possible to get great milage with these trucks but you aren't going to like driving that was at all. Most of the time I drive the truck the way I want and usually get around 12 L/100km (19.6 mpg). If I'm driving like a tool I'll get as low as 16 L/100km (14.7 mpg). It's mostly all in how you use that right foot.

I think you spend too much time looking at a gauge instead of the road. And what highway were you driving 90 kmh? Most of the 100 series highways in Canada now are 110 kmh, 100 at the least. I know that NB has some of the best twined highways in Canada now, but really.. you're a road hazard. And all for a couple of l/100km? Sounds harsh, but there it is.
