that play at your hub looks like there is too much free play at the diff it's only a few centimeters ad the hub which translates into a few MM at the ring = not good. the blacklash should only be a fraction of a mm like .03-.05mm just guessing since i don;t have a manual in my hands. but it's not that much.

if he's locked in the rear and the other side is on the ground... YES there shouldn't be that much play. remember that the play is exaggerated because of the hub. at the diff it's not near as much play but still more than is acceptable.

So in short, that still translates to something is up with the ring gear and pinion? or could it be something more?

The splines on the E-lock actually have quite a bit of slop in them too, especially if you use it all the time. I'd try putting the rear axle on jackstands and putting it in first gear. Carefully slide under it and pin point the noise. Or you could just pop the third out, it only takes 1/2 hour or so and you need to change your rear diff oil anyway. If the ring gear was blown you would know right away, and it usually takes 150,000 miles for them to get sloppy. I drove 20 miles on this ring gear like this-

Already had it on jack stands and in gear, got it up to 25mph (on the road the noise doesn't seem to start until about 15mph) and it made no noise, granted I didn't crawl under there too far... I think the noise requires it to be under stress from the weight of the vehicle and the engine. When I shift into neutral and just coast the noise pretty much disappears.

I know what a bad ring gear is like. haha. I couldn't go anywhere on this one, it slipped too much, had a hell of a time getting it on the trailer. The current one has about 2000 miles on it right now. So the diff fluid is pretty new too, although it may be a bit dirty from the extra shavings from the new ring and pinion.

Yep. I'm kind of hoping for ring gear and pinion, cuz then I'll have some 4.88's headed my way:D unless it can just be re-seated or something.

At least 1000, might have even been close to 2000. It has about 3000 on it now (I just checked my maintenance log that I keep).

What happened to putting an Access cab body on there and an exo cage? haha

Ignore what you see in the video. haha. Just listen to it. You can hear that grinding noise in it. I just put the driveshaft back in and drove it around the block. oh and you'll probably have to turn up the volume to hear it well.

    Do it!

Sorry to say it but that sounds like a 3rd member noise. Could be a bearing.

I had forgotten you had a diff issue before. Who set up that diff? Did they do a full kit, including new bearings? Was it the stealership under warranty??

I was over 60 miles from the dealership when it went so I took it to one of my dad's friends shops. He is a one man job and is supposed to be a damn good mechanic. Although diff's aren't real fun to do. He wanted to just pull a used one and put it in so he wouldn't have to play with the pinion angle at all, but my warranty said that was a no go and made him buy a brand new ring and pinion and put it in. I don't know if it was a new kit or not, I want to say yes but I am not sure. After I found out more about how difficult diffs were to do, I drove it around and listened to it a bunch, I even had my gf drive it by me and I listened to it a bunch for the first 100 miles on the diff and there was no noise at all coming from it. So if it is the ring gear and pinion, it must have wore poorly or something came loose I guess.

How sure are you of that?

I like the 2nd and 3rd gens the best. 2003 is when they change the body design and i no like it. My buddy just picked up a white 2nd gen and it fits 33's with no lift!
