Why do Americans still use slotted screws ?

I don't think there is an issue with the screw coatings , I think you are confusing that with the actually green pressure treated lumber that just changed formulations from CCA to ACQ .

CCA contained higher levels of copper and arsenic than does ACQ , however ACQ is substantially more corrosive

The *only* good thing about slot head screws is they're the easiest to clean out when they've been painted over. Of course once you get the paint out you still can't get the screw out...

 

Just saw an episode of this old house where he was removing the door hinge with a cordless drill. Of course, slotted screws. Laughing as he put all of his weight behind the drill to keep it from slipping.

I just bought 4 new (very expensive) work bench/tables for my job, and believe it or not, F-ing slotted screws! I dug up some real screws and put them together.

What is worse than a slotted screw? A slotted security screw. I replaced the security screen on our back door, and of course the old one and the new one had these goddamn thing in them.

They sell a special bit to drive and remove them. Special, alright. Like short bus special. Garbage. But beacuse the idiot who installed the first screen managed to completely miss any structure when driving in the original screws, I was able to actually able to grab the heads with vise grips and backed them out quite easily, because they were only going through stucco mold that I was ripping off anyway.

When it came to installing the new one, I got some Headlocks.

 

Jeez, 21 pages of ranting over slotted screws! And why would a Canadian assume they are and American invention? As has been said time and again, if you cant handle the task get a professional to fuck it up for you!

I dislike then also and NEVER use them on new I build, but seriously if you use the proper screwdriver that fits the slot and the head in not already buggered up, you can run these things in and out several times. I have seen plenty of buggered up heads on phillips head screws, these are even harder to get out IMO.

 

Slotted screws are the worst American contribution to the history of the world , Phillips head screws are a close second
