What are you talking about? You can't judge someones deal based on what you are stating. It's simple.. Whats your MSRP, what price did you get it at under or above invoice, and whats the invoice price of your truck?

cfrea, I am not attempting to start an argument. If you believe that an MSRP or an invoice that the dealer will show you, has anything to do with the price of the vehicle, then there is nothing more I can say to convince you that it does not.

2012 SR5, DBL Cab, 4WD with Display JBL Audio with Navigation, Daylight Running Lights and Tow Package, and dealer pinstripe and tinting - $30,707. Sticker was $33,070. Maybe could have done better, but there was a tradein involved and they gave me book on that as well as discounting the truck.

cfrea, no problem. All I was attempting to illustrate is that the price you should attempt to pay is based on what you build from the base up, not what the dealership will show you. Step 1.
In my example the base was 27585
add the packages you want $$
add the manuf del proc hndlg 880
add any other options you want
take that total and subtract 12%
    Step 2.
Then add in the TTT (get this information from the state tax commissioner no the dealer)
    Step 3.
The amount you end up with is + or - 1k from where you should shoot for.

All this is separate from any trade-in deal, that is why I recommend that you get the trade-in out of the way first.

Even if they sell you the vehicle at the price you determined from step 3, they will still make a handsome profit. There are dealer kickbacks that are never disclosed, almost every add on option has about 150% profit built in (think 299.00 floor mats). Then there is the financing kickbacks if you use their financing. Lastly, they do not actually pay the invoice or the sticker for the vehicle. I have heard that the reality is more like 18-20% from the invoice that you will never see. The so called dealer invoice is just another document they have in their arsenal to show you and say things like “I do not understand how you are getting your figures”.

My point to all this was to show that most people walk into a dealership and have no real understanding on how all this really works. Dealerships spend millions of dollars training their staff to dazzle and confuse consumers by simple tactics such as combining the trade-in with the purchase. More often than not, the finance manager is the largest money making point in a dealership. As I said before I am not a professional by any means, and I completely hate mathematics, but I have been through the ringer so many times (9 new vehicle purchases) that I finally understand the process. I owe most of what I have learned to my Dad who has never paid more than 18% of a new vehicle purchase. I tried several times to get the 18% off but ended up getting stuck with upside down trades, bad credit, or dealerships not willing to make a deal. I think alot of that had to do with timing (when to trade and when to buy). All i was hoping to do here was help people if they wanted it.

LMK if any of this is unclear or you wish to further this conversation via PM because I do not think everyone here wants to see our back and forth communication. Either way, I am happy to continue the conversation.

    Best Regards,
    Jeff

    Jeff,

You're right in regards to the invoice cost etc. It's always complete BS. The actual Dealer Cost is a lot less. Invoice cost is just something dealers provide to show u they how much money they are 'really' making. I obviously know its false. But where are you getting the 12% figure from?

In my case, my vehicle was MSRP 29,730. If you do the 12% calculation, and add TTT of about $2500 (here in CA). You come up with $28662.4. OTD I paid 28580 so right around the same thing. Just confused on your 12% number?

My deal was $1300 under invoice, plus the $1000 cash incentive from Toyota

cfrea, the 12% is arbatrary. Its also the number that USAA car buying service guaranties. But I chose a number between 9% and 18% ( the estimated widely accepted over price in the auto industry). Different auto manufacturers land at different ends of this scale and spacific vehicals affect this as well. based on my research, i found that 12% was close to this margin for the tacoma. Thats not say that 18% is not possible, but improbable. if i really wanted to get down to the best I feel I could get, I would have also cut each add on in half after the 12%. I hope this making sense.

    regards,
    jeff

Just purchased a 2012 Offroad DC Auto for $30,400 - $500 rebate totaling $29,900. Invoice was 30,800. Over $3,000 off MSRP. pretty strong deal on the last day of the month. They also gave me $21,600 for my 2011 Access Cab SR5 2.7L 5spd 4x4 with 20,000 miles. Best part is, i paid $23,400 for the truck brand new with 0 miles on it. Hard to beat only $1,800 in depreciation for driving 20,000 miles in 12 months!

How did you get heated leather seats? I thought only cloth seats are available in the US?

    Yeah.
I think some of the distributors sometimes add their own options. Gulf States supplies the Toyotas to dealerships in 5 states (GA is supplied by a different SouthEast distributor, not Gulf States), and I know they did add some of their own options like this. Usually it is just custom wheels, that kind of thing, but sometimes heated leather seats as well.

I traded a 2011 Nissan Frontier Pro4x crew cab loaded that had been wrecked for a DC Off Road 4x4 with a sticker just under $33k. I owed 25k on the trade and I'm sure the actual book on it was for about $23,500. I paid TTL out the door $31,000. I was happy considering the other truck was wrecked. The best I can figure with taxes and all I was really about $3500 under sticker. Maybe a little more.

cfra, the heated leather seats is an option available to be installed at the dealership. The Toyota retail price for this option is 1,500.00

Most dealerships have an outsource company come in to install this option as well as other things like roof racks and side step tubes.

That's a great deal. That graduate incentive is the extra bonus for all the hard work.

I'm about to pick up the same in black w/ the ball mount, window tint and predator steps for just under 31k +ttl. gonna see if they'll toss in a bed mat too for the 2 hr drive i'm gonna make for it.

Funny thing is while i'm firming up the deal, 2 other dealers contacted me with the pretty much same pricing, but in white (which i originally wanted).

i'll post up the final price i get.
