hard start after sitting 10-15 min

Hey guys. My 96 Taco is hard to start after sitting idle for 10-15 minutes. I've read some discussion concerning hard hot starts but could not find my particular situation. Has anyone else run into this problem. I have the ol' 24E in mine. 240k and still strong. Thanks

 

so is it easy to start after 15mins? is that the question? or you mean any time after 10mins

 

It starts easily immediately after shutoff. But if it sits for 10-15 it acts as if it is flooded. If I allow it to cool off for a while (@ 1 hour) it starts fine. It does this particularly on hot days.

 

Pardon my lack of knowledge, but does this have injectors or a carburetor?

 

Had the same issue with my 98 which also had the 2.4, never figured out what the problem was Good luck.

 

that's weird! but seems another person has had this experience so you're not alone, has it always done this? or recently, maybe leaky fuel injector

Have you had the injectors cleaned???

 

Throttle body injected. I've experienced the problem for @ 4 years. It's obviously not a huge problem since I've learned to work around it. But occasionally I'll stop somewhere that takes me 10-15 min before I'm off again and it happens.

 

Haven't had the injectors cleaned since it runs great otherwise.

 

Just a physics theory...

If the injectors are partially clogged, the heat may be causing the debris in them to swell causing tighter clogging... Once the engine cools off, then the swelling goes down...

The reason it would re-crank right away is that the gas already there hasn't had time to dissipate, however, in the 10-15 minute time frame, the gas does have time to dissipate causing it not to crank, and new gas cant' pass through as easily for the startup fuel needed...

I'm no expert, but that's my theory...

 

2RZ 2.4 is correct.

 

Coil packs... at least there are on mine. Don't know if that changed in 01 or not but I doubt it.

 

I would start with a seafoam treatment. It runs fine at idle and at speed?

 

I've had this issue for years. It is common and no clear remedy for many. It does seem that different failures can cause the same symptom. The local dealer says it's a problem in the fuel system - regulator, pump, filter and they swap 'em out until fixed. In many other cases, I think it's a sensor- computer issue though not clear about the mechanism. In my case, pulling the connector to the air temperature sensor will allow it to start right up in that situation, showing that the computer is getting bad info or conflicting info. Or else it's a bug in the programming. I swapped out the sensor but it did not fix the problem. I tested that and all other temperature related sensors, but all test fine (as specified in the FSM). I'm always looking for more clues, but for now, I just leave the air temp sensor disconnected in hot weather and problem solved. Don't know what it does to engine efficiency, but seems to run the same otherwise. hope that helps.

 

My 98 does this occasionally. Only after I drive it and park, then stop for a short time (1-10 mins). It always restarts after a 10-30 second wait, but its annoying. Even if I rev the engine, put it in first, and drive, if it wants to die, as soon as it hits idle again it dies....

 

My 96 2.4l did this. Never solved it before it was bought back but sea foam didn't help. Spark plugs and wires were good and only 115,000 miles.
