I just ordered the Pioneer AVH-8400BH. I should have everything and have it installed in a few weeks. I'll post pics when it is done.

 

Took me a day to figure out all the wires(ASWC, TR7 bypass) but it was worth it. I'm kind of dissapointed by the NAV low resolution.

I am currently picking out a new receiver for my 06 Taco. I am down to the Kenwood Excelon KDC-x696, Pioneer DEH-6400BT, Sony MEX-BT4000p, or Alpine CBE-133BT.
I am leaning towards the Kenwood. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience w/these units?

 

Sony's seem to be a good bang for the buck since they're generally cheap but I'm getting a Kenwood soon since I'm an audiophile and the Kenwoods seem to be where its at.

Pioneer just ain't what it used to be.

 

My primary concern is definitely the quality of the sound

 

Look into this deck. It has been excellent for me. I wasn't a fan of Sony until I saw this one.

I will look into it...I am also having a trouble deciding between the black or gray mounting kit. I will most likely order whatever receiver I decide on from Crutchfield due to the good experiences I've had in past.

 

I know it's been a while since this was posted but it's the funniest thing I've read in a VERY long time.

 

Then stay away from Kenwood. Sony makes a FAR better sounding unit. So does Pioneer. I prefer Alpines but I'm running an external processor. The best sounding HUs without a processor are Pioneer and Sony. I REALLY wish they'd bring over the processing from the P80 and put it in a DD unit. That would be a winner. If you don't need the screen, look into that unit. Less than $300, sounds amazing and has a crap ton of processing power.

Honestly its a matter of opinion.

1. Head unit may be easier to reach depending on where you would mount the portable.

2. Cable runs across dash to the unit. Small trips you can run off battery.

3. In dash unit will mute the audio when you are receiving turn directions. Garmin may be difficult to hear over music.

4. You can take a portable in a rental car, work vehicle or borrowed car. Even mounted to a bicycle.

5. Garmin offers lifetime map updates for $99, at least when I did it. One time update is like $60 I think. Not sure about the Pioneer policy.

I have a portable, and don't plan on getting in dash. Not worth the extra dough over a regular HU IMHO. Plus I have CoPilot on my Android. It's a GPS app that stores the whole US on the SD card. No data is used by the program while navigating. Only costs $20-$30 on Google Play store IIRC. I keep my phone on me all the time so I always have a GPS on hand and my wife keeps the Garmin in her car. She's got the same app too as a backup on her phone. We never get lost!

You gotta look the pros and cons and decide if it's worth it to you. I don't think it is. Maybe you will.

Another thing to keep in mind is that many of the display head units offer compatibility with an add on nav unit if you decide you want it later on. Not ideal installation wise, I suppose, but at least you have the option.

Ill show off mine...its a Pyle sitting in a Scosche dash piece with the iPod cable coming through the dash scope.
Works great. Im planning on putting in two 12's and tweeters.

 

I had a single 8 in a sealed box behind the seat of my single cab S-10. Sound quality was great, and volume was plenty for my taste. I kept the sub level typically around -3 on the Kenwood HU. So I had volume to spare.

Anyone have experience with a single 8 in a double cab? I think it would still be sufficient for my DC, but I think I have an old MTX 12 laying around somewhere (from my younger days when I thought the whole neighborhood wanted to listen along) if not.

I'm more concerned with SQ than shaking the cars at stoplights, though I do require a little volume.

 

i always put mom's garmin up by the rear view nice out of my sight of road and traffic, can look at it easy. i usually have the sound turned down any ways. some times turn it up if i need it. i really think i would like the convenience of it in the head unit. not having to take it down and hide it all the time, so someone dose not see it. i have an app on my iphone as well, but hard to see when driving and all and head some times.


i know when i was in WNY last august for a month seeing family. i used the Garmin A LOT! because i did not know the area well after a few weeks i kinda new where stuff was. but it got annoying hiding it all the time. i’m about to tint my windows to 15% so i don’t see people seeing in very well or easy.
