Autobacs Strauss, Auto-Parts Store, Files Bankruptcy (Update2)

Feb. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Autobacs Strauss Inc., an after- market auto-parts retailer, sought bankruptcy protection from creditors after its Japanese parent company stopped supplying it with funds.
The company, based in South River, New Jersey, said in Chapter 11 documents filed today in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Delaware, that it had assets of $75 million and debt of about $72 million as of Jan. 3. According to the filing, Autobacs USA Inc., which holds all of the company and is a unit of Tokyo-based Autobacs Seven Co., will file for protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California.
Autobacs Strauss was formed when Japanese auto-parts retailer Autobacs Seven Co. purchased the assets of bankrupt auto-parts retailer R&S Parts & Services Inc. for about $41 million in March 2007, according to court documents. The sale closed that May, according to Bloomberg data.
After acquiring the assets, Autobacs Seven loaned the company money to fund the rehabilitation of its stores. While the renovation drove sales higher, the company wasn’t able to turn a profit, court papers show.
Autobacs Seven told Autobacs Strauss in December that it would no longer supply it with working capital. On Feb. 2, Autobacs Strauss received a letter from its Japanese parent that it was in default under it loan agreements. Autobacs Seven is owed about $42.4 million for the loans; no collateral was pledged to secure the loans, according to court documents.
    Store Closings
Glenn R. Langberg, Autobacs Strauss president, said the company “intends to promptly and efficiently close certain of its underperforming stores” to focus on its higher-margin service-based locations and retain certain larger stores as “inventory hubs.” Langberg was appointed as the company’s president two days ago to manage the restructuring, according to court papers.
Autobacs Strauss operates 86 after-market auto parts retail stores in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The company has 40 stores in the New York metropolitan area, 33 elsewhere in New Jersey, and 13 in Philadelphia and the surrounding region. Autobacs provides auto services at 68 of those stores. When the company filed for protection, it employed about 1,450 people, according to court papers.
Autobacs, in court papers, said it lost about $11 million on revenue of about $150 million for the year ended Jan. 3.
The company’s 30 largest unsecured creditors are owed about $14 million, according to court filings. Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. claims it is owed more than $1 million, and Exide Technologies is owed about $570,000, court documents show.
The case is In re Autobacs Strauss Inc., 09-10358, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Delaware (Wilmington).

    MYFOXNY.COM -
New Jersey based Strauss Auto has reportedly declared bankruptcy and closed all of its stores.
A tipster emailed a photo of a sign on a New York location with a sign saying the store had closed and a toll free number for consumers.
The Strauss Auto web site has been reduced to a single page with the same phone number.
The MyFoxNY.com tipster says the stores closed overnight and more than 300 employees were left with no warning.
It was unclear how many stores the discount chain actually had open before the bankruptcy but an archived version of the chain's site showed 45 locations.
The company's was still live Tuesday evening and did not mention the closures or bankruptcy.
The company was founded in 1919 in Newark.
