Well this should be fun. I got a task to do a p2v. normally not a big deal. I was told it was windows 2000. not a problem. I get into it and start looking around. Not windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0. well this should be fun. I know it can be done but it may be a little more challenging.

What is the process? Image the original and move it to the virtual?

basically yes. VMware has a converter tool that will do it all for you, except the newer version doesn't support NT 4.0. I had to go find the 3.01 converter and i'll go from there. The other options are to get a ghost image of it and then vmware can import the ghost image as well.

Gawd, what do you guys run that still requires NT 4.0?!? I thought my company was outdated...

Even our VRU's that are 800mhz PIII's run Win2k... hah.

I used Acronis to do ours (not NT though). The install disks I received were Acronis images. It worked well. The only issue I had was the Acronis image wouldn't install to a smaller hard drive space. So I had to create an equal sized drive to the original computer and then installed the image. Then I created a new virtual drive the size I wanted and then used Ghost to copy the larger virtual drive to the smaller drive. Then I deleted the original drive.

Only certain versions of Ghost will directly import with the VMWare deploy/importer (for a direct install from a ghost image to an uncreated vmware image). None of our versions worked directly. The only way I could install it was to create a new Windows VM image and then set the VM's bios to boot off the cd/dvd and install the image like you would on a regular computer. I had to use the same method with the Acronis image.

This was a server hidden in the depths of IT. They were sure we had gotten rid of all win 2k servers too but there are like 5 of them still hanging around.

I've got an easy question, but it's been bugging the hell out of me:

What do you guys use to clean laptop screens, etc? I can't keep coworkers from grubbing my gear.

    GOOD LORD DON'T DO THIS!!!

Ammonia will kill the screen. We've had several users that cleaned screens using Windex, and ruined them. This works on old CRT's, but who the hell uses those anymore? :p

I use water and a shammois... some sort of terry/microfiber cloth. Don't use paper towel or kleenex!

If you really want to go all out, this stuff is awesome. Comes with a huge bottle of this mystery fluid and a great microfiber cloth.

+1 ... I have used ammonia-free glass cleaner and it's okay, but really not the best.

definitely use a soft terry cloth or microfiber as the rough fibers in paper products will scratch your screen

ammonia or alcohol based cleaners will leave an opaque film or "fog" on LCD screens and can also cause discoloration. Some high-end displays come with a glass substrate layer like HDTVs, but even this is delicate.

Are you only cleaning CRT's? :p

Seriously, unless you're just cleaning CRT's, don't use ammonia-based cleaners. They will damage the LCD panel.

    thanks guys.
Yup, knew about the windex badness.
I wonder if Stoner's invisible glass would work - already have some for the truck, so would be great if it can work here too. I'll have to check the label.

A bit of water works fine IMHO. That Monster screen cleaner crap is just fancy water methinks :p

totally, it's just reverse-osmosis filtered water. and maybe some fast-drying additive or something.

Yea, no minerals would mean no streaks...

Meh. I "borrowed" a bottle from an old job years ago and still have the bottle. I do remember it being expensive ($15? which included the microfiber cloth...) - anything with that 'Monster' name on it is marked up 80+%

    Two observations about this thread.

    1. I can't understand a fucking thing you are talking about. Except for Windex. I know what that is.
    2. There are no boobs in it.
