I've used a lot of those, pita most times. We built a huge ass wrap around deck a few years ago. All brazilian hard wood. Each piece had to be cut with a biscuit jointer for the clip and screw. Each screw needed to be predrilled since the material was so dense. And every end had to be biscuit jointed and pl'd together.

That shit weighed a ton and took forever.

so pretty much a full replacement? Lol

 

Yes, roughly. But I might add on to it to go closer to my bedroom. It would cover up the AC unit though, and I would have to make a cut out for the power box. Eh, it's still better than replacing my whole house right?

I really want to replace my front porch. The previous owners friend built it. Don't think he knew what a level was. And pretty much everything is screwed together with concrete screws lol.

Only thing holding me up from doing it is the cost of the stupid building permit.

 

Wichita doesn't require building permits for that sort of thing. Any major inside work does. I re-did my whole kitchen and upstairs bathroom and was told not to worry by my realtor.

 

Anything structural requires a permit here. Only thing you don't need a permit for is building a shed under 100sq ft

The permit for me to build my front porch (5x12) is about 3x the price for me to build a 10x20 deck on the back of my house

 

WTF? So glad I live in a state that allows DIY and only require permits for safety things. I need to build a shed in the back at some point too. Maybe I should just move.

 

Ya it's a stupid city bylaw.

 

Any way for you to skirt the cost? Maybe see if there is some sort of trade school that needs the practice and you will supply the materials?

That's too bad. My friends deck got their deck done by a trade school for wood only. It was a 3 tier deck about 30x40 or something. They came in and did everything and he sat back and drank beer. No labor, and no labor costs!
