Always thought about it but never went through the paperwork, now that I am in NY, I don't believe it's allowed, never looked into it here. So what handgun do you plan to carry, revolver, auto, big bore or attention getter ? I was always fond of the James Bond: Walther PPK 380, small, durable, feels good in the hand.

i love a revolver, the reliability is just the best. i have a taurus titanium .44 special 5 shot. the cylender is about the size of a 357 mag cuz it's only a 5 shot. and with a 2" barrell it isn't hard to conceal. it only weighs about 19oz unloaded i think.
the .38 version is a lot smaller and easier to conceal, but doesn't fit my hand well. this fits in my hand well.

one pic is mine, the other is from the website.

the just changed the law here were you don't have to have a CHL to carry in your car, but i want to be able to actually carry it on me, and in other states that honor/recognize TX's CHL owners.

Have you ever been in a situation where you thought you might need to use it ? I have been in some really "seedy" places and have never felt in grave danger. I know that there is danger everywhere, and it could happen to me as at anytime, and I also know that no matter what you do (protection) or what you say (disarmed situation) that anyone could be lying in a pool of there own blood, that fate was directing this moment and this is how it's all going down. I hope and prey that no one is put in this situation, Rochester has a huge murder rate, as a fact, we had the most murders in the state for 2006, and for 2007 we came in second. I feel that you can't run from danger, but I also feel that the "bad guys" are not afraid of "us" whether we have a hand gun or not.

I'm planning on getting my CCW in VA this year. Virginia does require that you provide proof of having attended a training program. I've got a S&W .38 special that I'm looking to trade in or sell to get a Kahr CW9. Just not a fan of a revolver in my pocket.

yeah, we gotta take a class here. you would have to be deaf, blind, and stupid to fail it tho. i think the class is too easy. any close calls for me have always been at home, and of course i have always had my gun at home, but never had a close call out in houston, but other co-workers have.

like thunter, i just wanna be prepared.

Its hopeless in this screwed up state. that is, unless you are an anti-gun movie star or a politician with deep pockets. I hate CA. The best I can do is keep a loaded 12 gauge at my house. Which I do.

Hey concrete jedi you can get one here in ny. I have a concealed carry. Now it was easy for me to get at the time. I was a sheriff deputy and that helped the whole process. It really depends on which county you live in. Some counties are sticklers on concealed carry. I believe that Monroe county is a good bet if you have been a good boy all your life. I believe that you are not allowed anymore to use judges or current police for a reference. A while back I knew of a few websites that walked you through the process and gave you helpful advice on how to get a CCW. It helped a friend of mine get it and he was not in law enforcement. I will check on a few websites and get out my old law books for you. I carry a 380 semi auto. It’s the perfect size. I can carry that on my ankle holster or my inside pants holster. There is no way anyone can tell I have it. I also have a ruger 357 mag, and a berretta 22 speed target pistol. I don’t normally carry these concealed because of the bulk.

I forgot to mention that you do not need a course for monroe county and a few others in NY. But it is a good idea. For one it looks goof for the judge that signs off on your permit and also once you have the certificate you can send a copy of it with a application to a few other neighboring states and get a CCW there also. So another words you dont even have to be a resident of ohio, penn etc.. But yet still be able to carry your pistol from ny to these other states. Which is a good idea of you do any traveling.

Ok I can’t seem to find the right website I was talking about. I believe it was packing.org, it’s been a few years and it must be gone now. I think it would be great if there was a federal concealed carry law. That way we could carry to any state. The thing I don’t get is that my marriage license and drivers license is valid from state to state. But not my pistol permit. Anyways on the topic of revolver vs. semi. I carry a semi, but I shoot a lot and clean a lot. If some of you guys only carry a pistol for that slight chance of using it then I would recommend carrying a small snub nose revolver. You would never want to be at a bank or store robbery with a semi auto and have the gun misfire or jam. Then you are the first to get shot at. After carrying my semi for sometime i am amazed at all the lint and dirt that gets into the slide and other parts. With a revolver there is less moving parts and less chance for a miss fire and jam.

Ok I will stop posting about this. Its just that I have been a huge supporter of this and its easy to get me going on the topic.

I agree Concrete! !! I also feel that there are too many guns out there already and by me also having one would only make a bad situation worse! !

I am not intending to sound like an NRA poster here, but I have to differ with you on this Don. It is a proven fact that states with CCW statuets on the books have a significantly lower rate of "random/oportunistic violent crime." That is not to say lower crime overall or anything like that, and CCW legislation does nothing really to disuade "planned out pre-meditated" crimes, but in states with CCW laws, there is a much lower number of things like muggings, car jackings and the like. Stop and think about it for a minute. Even the most desperate criminal hopped up on whatever usually has enough grey matter left to reason out that the 20 bucks I might have in my wallet is not worth the slug he might catch if I was packin'.

Now of-course, to me all of this is a moot point untill such time as I leave Jersey, as we are next in-line to Cali for stupid and retarted gun laws. And while Jersey claims to have a CCW permit law on the books, it is a defacto ban on CCW because no judge in the history of the state has ever granted one except to off-duty and retired law enforcement.

Right, I don’t think that handguns are for everyone. But lets just say that they should not be hard to get for law abiding citizens. If for example a teacher at virgina tech had a concealed carry and was allowed to carry on a campus. I highly doubt there would be as many deaths then. Does anyone remember the mall shooting in Utah. There was 5 deaths, but it could have been worse. Thankfully there was a man there with a concealed carry permit and he stopping the mad man before he shot even more people. Bad guys will always be able to get guns. But with more everyday citizens carrying weapons I think that the more serious crime would go down. No one shoots up a police station or robs a gun store during business hours. But they will rob a gas station everyday. Coincidence, I think not.

Thanks Stratton I'll get up with you (p.m) and we'll see what is all involved. I would also like some direction from you on where to look at the laws concerning this issue of protection of self and property. It is pretty disturbing what happened in Florida, protecting ones self and ones property is legally challenging, not to end up in jail for doing so. One side of me says shame on you for trying to steal or hurt me, so here comes the lead ! ... the other side of me says is it really worth killing a man for taking something from me that I can replace from the store. Is it up to me to extinguish this person (who is no good to the bone), what are the ramifications ? lifetime of guilt ? sleepless nights of thought, remorse ? who knows how it would change me, what scares me the most if it didn't change me. I have I become as calloused as the man I took ? I think going through the legal process, the searching through your history, registering with the state, this is the easy part, living with the end result is when it become difficult.

Well that is just the thing. It all depends on the moment and circumstance. I don’t think that I as an average citizen I would pull a gun unless it was to stop a rape, murder, or a threat to my family’s well being. An example of that would be a home intrusion. Recently in the news there was the guy in Texas who shot and killed two guys who where robbing his neighbors place. I say good for him But he is the one that has to live with it. I don’t think I personally would end a life over property. But what if one day I needed to protect my family. I would never get any rest after knowing that I could have did more to protect them. Since you’re a Rochester guy you will also remember last Easter how two African American guys kidnapped a wife, husband and kid. And how they drove around molesting the wife in front of her family by shoving foreign objects up her, all while the husband watched helplessly, Finally as they showed off their “white bitch” to their other friends, someone had the decency to call the police and give a description of the car they were in. After hearing about these stories, I don’t know why more people don’t at least have a shotgun or something in their home. I bet when that husband gets out of therapy he will get an alarm system and shotgun.

Yeah, but after that; the damage is done and irreversible, all you have now is a mean, scared, monster who wants his revenge, I would be one myself. Yes maybe a weapon would have prevented this from happening. When you hear of such atrocities, yeah you want a gun. Now you have a guy who finds his wife is cheating on him, yes it's wrong, and he is angry, justifiable. He gets a gun, finds both of them, shoots and kills both of them. Now what ? Does it escalate from there ? what if there were kids ? it all gets very cloudy. I think what I am getting at is: in for a penny...in for a pound. I still lean on self protection, but it does get messy.
