Which one would you prefer: rear diff lock or 4x4?

Hey all,
I'm making a decision between two Tacoma's and I have no idea which one to choose. It's either a 2wd with rear diff lock or a 4x4. I am pretty sure each has it's pros and cons, but I would like to know what are they?

I know the easiest decision to make is to purchase a 4x4 trd, but to make a long story short - I purchased a 4x4 trd tacoma yesterday only to find out it was stolen when i registered the vehicle today. Now I am out a lot of cash and now have to find a cheaper Tacoma.

Any input with be appreciated.

A lot depends on what your planned use for the truck will be ...

 

It depends on what you're gonna do with the vehicle.

However - If you have any thoughts of actually needing a locker (in offroad type situations), get the 4WD. You can add a locker later if you need it and have an even more capable vehicle.

There's only so much you can do with a 2WD in terms of capability for offroad situations.

If you need it for snow driving - definately get the 4WD. Using the locker on the street is not a good idea.

 

Yeah...The 4WD can have a locker installed for a smaller amount of money than a 2wd conversion to 4WD...

Go with the 4x4 and see what that does for you...and then upgrade if need be.

 

Thanks for the input everybody. I'm going to go check out the 4x4 this friday. Hopefully this one isn't stolen as well. FYI be careful when buying from private party. The guy I bought it from had a fake title and registration paper work (looked so real). The CHP officer said, if he pulled me over and I handed him the fake registration it would had pass through him easily. He suggested in the future that I check with any CHP office regarding any vehicle I am considering purchasing.

 

Why not just get both!

Well I bought my truck about 3 wks ago for 15K, its 2003 with less the n 40Kmiles. And its fully loaded. Do some searching I bet you can find the best of both worlds!

 

Get the 4x4 and add a detroit locker you'll be set. Offroad 2wd is only good for desert and hard pack dirt. If you wanna Crawl or actually do something serious offroad 4x4 is a must.

And the guy that sold you the stolen truck, what's gonna happen to him?
