I still don't see the benefit of leasing a car

Certain. If they come in and leave, they leave their office lights on. They don't want the employees to run amuck if they are thought to be gone for the day.

Since it's a "fun" car it's highly likely I'll want something else in three years. Also since it's brand new if it turns out to be a dud I'm not stuck with it. And I would rather not have the higher payments of financing. I know not the most fiscally responsible thing but I would rather have money available for other things.

You make a payment (down payment also) monthly to "rent" it. And if you go over the terms, you pay more. Why not buy it out right?

What happens if it gets totaled in an accident?

Leasing can make sense for some people in some instances.

Even when you buy a car, you do not get the value of your payments back, you lose it in depreciation. With a lease, you are pretty much financing the amount of depreciation. If you want to turn over your car in 2-3 years and don't drive more than the agreement allotment it can be a good choice. Especially for a toy, like the FR-S.

The monthly payment is roughly $100 less for a lease all other things being equal, like I said I would rather have that money now. I believe I'll eat about $2k in finance charges above what I would pay in interest if I buy it.

That's what gap insurance is for, and that's no different for leasing or buying (unless you put about 20% down when you buy).
