For those of you who did the bushing, what all did you replace and how much were you out? Also, how long would you figure it would take somebody that doesnt mechanic much to do this.

Anybody got a write up perhaps? If not, you guys that are talking about doing it, I would sure appreciate one. I think I am going to have to do it or have it done soon. I cant stand the vibe. I just need to know what to expect as far as cost and time for me to do it or have somebody else do it.

 

You replace the needle bearing on the drivers side diff with the bushing from ecgs . If you go to there site they have prices . I forget because it was months ago . I believe someone wrote up in this thread what tools are needed , ecgs did a write up on how the remove and install it . Go back into this thread and read .
As far as how long depends on the person .

 

The bushing is about $60 if I remember correctly. I'm skeered to just start taking everything out of my truck to do this, since I have never done any of it before. The guy that would help me do it has only ever done solid axle work on his jeeps. He's good with those, but never messed with anything like this, so other than being another mind on the project, he's got no experience.

 

sounds like you need to pay a shop to do it . or find a local TW guy to lend a hand .

 

I paid 80 bucks for a bushing, seal, needle bearing puller, and the race driver tool kit. You don't have to get all of that, but it made it so much smoother for the install. For me the hardest part about it was getting the cv axle out, but there are a few good writeups floating around on how to do it, and as long as you can follow basic instructions and keep your wits about you, along with some common sense, it should be very straight forward; same goes for the bearing removal/bushing install. I am certainly no mechanic, and I'm still learning, but it took me and a buddy about 3 hours by the time it was all said and done. I had to replace my cv axle. The bushing from ECGS was totally worth it. Good luck!

 

LOL Aint to many people on here local.

I hate paying a shop to do something like this. I just hate not ever having done anything like this before without somebody that has bieng around. I'll probably end up doing it myself, but I'm just kinda hesitating and putting it off.

 

Is this for 1st gen, 2nd gen, or all?

 

I think this issue only affects 2nd gens. Can you recreate the issue this addresses on your 1st gen?

 

I need to replace my needle bearings(in the front diff where my cv's go in) on my 1st gen. I have 285k miles on her. Do you know what the part #'s are? Can't find them any where.

Just finished with the Bushing Swap and also replaced both CVs. Big thanks to ECGS for working up a solution to this problem!

I used the ECGS bearing puller tool and it worked great. I think I even had an easier time with it than Chase did in the video!

Preparing for a difficult time getting the axles out I had rented a slide hammer/puller but I didn't even use them. I tried a couple different pry bars and steel pins to hammer on it with a 4lb sledge (also rotating the axle to different spots for a few tries) and it only took a few minutes to find the magic combination.

The only other recommendation I would give is to make sure you have an impact wrench handy for the axle nut and rusty suspension bolts. I used a generic brand corded 1/2" impact and it worked great!

Just installed my diff drop. I just took a spin around the block and it seems like the vibe is gone. If it is there, it isnt near as noticeable. Looks like it worked. Wish I would have put it on when I installed my lift.

I did have one issue putting it on. There is a brace that goes from the crossmember to the bumper that was slightly in the way. I loosened the bolts on the brace and it moved over just enough to make it work.

Also, since my floor jack got jacked when I moved in here, I wasnt able to use one to support the diff. I simply undid one side completely and loosened the other until it allowed me to put the spacer in. Rinse and repeat for the other side. I still have to put my skid back on, but I will do that on my next day off or one morning when I get off work. I want to ride around a bit and then retighten the bolts.

There were a few threads like this (one of which was deleted that had the most info because the OP got permanently banned) and one of the participants had a 1st gen with this exact same problem. He ended up paying an independent shop to replace his needle bearing from outside the diff (like we're doing with the 2nd gen) for about $500.
