Dual 10" subwoofers in an 05+ Access Cab

Xtreme Kreations makes some sweet speaker panels that attach to the rear door panels on the 05+ Access Cabs. It's a great way to add some boom without losing any usable space in the rear, unless you're really set on keeping those rear door pockets.

The preparation work is time-consuming and this is not a bolt-on mod, but with some patience the results will come out great. The panels themselves are fiberglass and include a 1 cubic foot sealed box for the subwoofer. I spent about 2 weeks prepping the door panels and speaker panels, working the occasional night after work for an hour or two. Steps were pretty straight-forward:

1. Cut the stock door panel to fit the new fiberglass panel. Dremels rock.
2. Cut some wooden rings to fit behind the fiberglass to hold the speakers in place.
3. Cut the fiberglass to fit the speakers.
4. Epoxy the wooden rings behind the fiberglass. I cut a slit in the subwoofer rings so they could be worked inside the box through the speaker opening.
5. Line up the speakers and drill mounting holes.
6. I lined the openings with HushMat to limit any vibrations.
7. Mount the speakers to the panels.
8. Mount the fiberglass panels to the stock door panels using the supplied studs and nuts and lots of silicone to prevent any rattling.
9. Modify the door metal on the truck to fit the speaker boxes and move the wiring so nothing gets pinched.
10. Line the modified door openings with sound-deadening material, again to prevent rattling. I can't say enough good things about HushMat.
11. Run the wires to and from the door panels and install the door panel back on the door.
12. Hook up your amp and enjoy annoying the guy sitting next to you at the light.

I didn't take pictures of the door panel mods because it's just a matter of cutting plastic and fiberglass, which is pretty uninteresting. I used a 10" subwoofer and a 6.5" 2-way speaker on each side. The finished door panel ready for installation looks like this:

Once everything is installed it looks really trick. I don't have any pictures of the final product because, once everything was installed, I couldn't close my door. The main hoop of my rollcage interfered with the speakers, so it's back to the drawing board for me.

I have an idea that'll make all this work with my cage but it's going to take a bit of time and A LOT of fiberglass work. I'll post an update once I get it all finished and installed. For those of you not running a full rollcage, this is a hell of a solution to the no-space-for-speakers-in-an-Access-Cab issue!

Oh, and these speakers BOOM! I tested them on my home stereo. The neighbors were none too happy with me!

As for the combination of the cage and the system, this thing will be a daily driven race truck and I need something that'll sound good over the insane amount of road noise.

It's my "Let the NJ in you shine through!" mod.

 

Finally got these things installed. I took a jigsaw and free-handed the raised speaker-mount sections out of the panels, flipped them over, and re-glassed everything so the speakers are recessed rather than raised.

My cuts weren't round by any stretch of the imagine but the modifications worked and the doors now close. I painted the panels to match the cage rather than try to color-match the interior.

The system hits pretty hard. The amp is a 4-channel Boss amp supposedly cranking 1000 watts peak. I figure I'm getting 125 watts per channel at best, but it's plenty for me.

But as I see it, it's my truck my way. Besides, there's not a whole lot of desert in NJ and this thing will spend far more time on-road than off.

It really does sound killer.
