I always wondered what it meant. I mean, how did Toyota come up with the name Prerunner? I guess that a 4runner is a vehicle that runs in 4 wheel drive but a prerunner? Does it run before something?

Through the magic of google I found the answer and here it is from an AutoWorld website:

If i remember correctly a prerunner PRE runs the off road course before the actual race.

Prerunner (n): The truck that pre runs the trail to make sure it is safe for the almighty 4x4 to take. Usually found stuck in 3in of sand or at your local mall parking lot.

example: "Hey, why is that Tacoma stuck on that speedbump? Oh it must be a Prerunner"

I think offroading in a 2wd is alot funner and more challenging. And the rear locker never hurts.

If I lived in Colorado I wouldn't own a prerunner. But living in the desert of southern AZ, you don't really need 4wheel drive unless you want to do some serious off-roading. I can take may prerunner a lot of places (not everywhere though). Just my .02

not really perks of a 4wd is that its not always in 4x4 so you have as much fun challenge as you can in 2wd tell your ass is stuck in the sand, then i twist that pretty little knob on my dash and whala im free while your stuck waiting for a friend with a strap :D
