Thinking about taking a trip to Moab

    Well like the title says I'm thinking about taking a road trip to Moab. If I'm able to make this trip (all depends on hurricanes and if I can get leave) would anyone in that area be willing I show me around some easy trails? I'm thinking about going in the August/September time period. Are there any particular places I should visit while I'm in that area? Thanks!

    Yup. Stay in the shade! (if you can find it)

    I've been there twice for 2 to 3 wks at a time in late Sept and early Oct, and both were hot as hell :eek:(but more fun:D).

    I heard the best weather was around April and again late Oct.

    Well at least you're not driving a black truck.;)

    I took 3 7-gallon water containers, in addition to a bunch of 1 quart nalgene bottles. Can't have too much water. You learn how to take a complete "shower" with one quart of water every few days.

    I would go out for 3-5 day forays by myself, staying to the more mellow trails and used my vehicle as transport to trail heads for my mountain bike. I was traveling alone so had to be VERY careful. Scared my self a few times; like the time I was coming back and the trail washed out, leaving a big sink hole in the middle to drive around. And the time I got dehydrated on the Poison Spider Mesa (110°F in the sun, no shade), fell off my bike and broke 4 ribs.:eek:. (Still hurts thinking about it)

    August is high monsoon season. Expect afternoon thunder showers and high flash flood risk. Lots of these trails run through clay beds that become impassable when wet. Plenty of people still out having fun, but there are added challenges as well as very high heat.

    That's good to know. I was going to stick to the easy trails and was hoping I could get a few of the locals to do a few day trips with me so I wouldn't be out there alone.

    Yeah I would deff bring a lot of water and have to bring enough for 2 people at that. Breaking ribs would hurt a lot. I plan on getting a hotel room for the nights and just going out to do some day trips.

    Still, anytime you go out on day trips, be prepared for an extended stay. (? 4 days)

    In the high heat it would be helpful to be able to cool off indoors at night.
    Be sure to fully rehydrate at night and get enough electrolytes, esp potassium. Minimize or abstain form alcohol which can affect your performance the next day, and create hazards. (no, my fall was not proceeded by alcohol.)

    Have fun, I'm jealous.:jellydance:

    Yeah any time i go out in the country roads or when i was in Alaska any time id leave the town id always pack for a few days. There will not be any alcohol drank during this trip since i will be with my dad spending some time with him.

    If you want a break from the heat, look into the Geyser Pass trail. It goes up through the La Sal mountains where you will hit almost 11k' elevation. And if you like to trout fish, snag a license down at Walker's on main street. There are 5 high altitude lakes up there loaded with trout. Warner and Oowah are close together and a blast to fish when they are biting. Blue, Dark Canyon, and Medicine lakes are on the other side of the mountain range.

    What is Geyser Pass trail rated? I'd love to go fishing up there. I want to hit as many trails as I can nothing more than a 2 maybe 3 until I get a winch.
