    Drove it to the beach.

A dock that broke loose from some port city in Japan during the tsunami floated all the way across the Pacific and ended up on one of our beaches here in Oregon. Kind of eerie.

So after 6 years I finally got around to figuring out why my tailgate handle protrudes from the trim by at least 1/2"

When I pulled off the access panel I was surprised to see one of those metal braces (?) just floating around my tailgate. The welds were busted

    Driver's side (busted):
    photo-19-1_fbf2e006d0c9cb1d2274996b4e0ea7bb848e2873.jpg

    Passenger side (fine):
    photo-20-1_9f8622b3f4b2d78ac4241b130d71336747b8b2e8.jpg

Nothing a wooden shim can't fix:
    photo-21_59805e81cc886c2dd90d3f283ac791e33226d370.jpg

So now onto the reason why I opened the panel. This is what my tailgate handle has looked like for about 6 years:

    photo-22-1_1f704549e2bbbb58a795cecf2b86436905b6c6a9.jpg

Upon inspection I realize that the panel itself was pushing on the back side of the handle mechanism thus making it protrude. Notice how the section of panel behind the handle is concave and not convex:

    photo-23-1_6a301ef79dcb915139ea7f697d05d220b98a1b4f.jpg

Yup, it's the panel pushing the handle mechanism out:

    photo-24-1_21e2d6e0c0a070b3b5baf04443ef85b0bd62c578.jpg

So I got out my body repair kit and went to work:

    photo-26-1_611dacb3c5124704e34297d9cf3b1b336b6288a5.jpg

Put every thing back together and voila! Flush:

Same thing happened to mine about a two months ago. I was picking up a keg with a buddy to restock his kegerator. Didn't use enough tie downs and the keg slammed the back panel, pushing out my handle like yours. Used pretty much the same tools too. :D

Lol, yes it was. But we weren't able to tap it that night. We concerned all we would be able to pull is foam. So it became a Jack Daniels night. Thank baby Jesus we carried that up front with us. :D
