Actually, according to the Solo Cup Company, it's a myth (yes, I own a store and asked). The sidewall ridges were added for strength & improved grip, not measurement. Cups are sold based solely on total volume capacity, with no real consideration for lessor increments of that. Of course, the ridges could obviously be used as a gauge if you want, but that wasn't the intent of the design.

Will somebody please do some "independent research" to verify the measurements?

 

Something I stumbled on tonight. Looked legit. A local radio station posted it. Supposedly several people that commented said they tried it & it was true. I'll have to test this when I get home from work in the morning.

 

Look, just because the Solo company didn't know about it doesn't mean it isn't real. The engineer who drew the mold or the machinist who carved it might have included this little "coincidence" of their own volition.

The cups are sold worldwide (have been for decades), where "ounces" are certainly not used as a measurement.
