I've seen a few questions regarding shoes and where/what to buy. Check out www.runningwarehouse.com. I've been dealing with them for about 4 years now and they offer the best online prices and selection that I've found. I buy 90% of my sport shoes from them. Their customer service is awesome and they offer free 2nd day shipping and free returns.

That's awesome country. It doesn't look that different from the Texas Hill Country although I believe your hills are bigger than ours! Looks like some good running grounds!

I hit a 6miler this morning. At 6am it was already 74 deg and 84% humidity. Makes for a pretty miserable run, but got it done. Avg'd 7:48's. Went and swam after that. Water felt great!!

could be very similar country, it's SE Montana- combination of prairie grasslands and Ponderosa Pine/Juniper rolling hills- I was in New Mexico a couple of years and saw some very similar country down there

this area has several contiguous state and BLM sections that gives me routes up to 16 miles and happens to be just a few miles out of town; amazingly it's very underutilized, which is fine by me :)

Doing the ING New York City Marathon Nov. 4, 2012. I am hopelessly slow, but dad died at age 58, so can't afford be the typical fat lazy American memorized by deadly capitalism. I often think my Dad died of Capitalism. He thought Coca Cola, Marlboro, fast food etc were all good for you. We are bombarded by deadly things in this country. I like how endurance running kind of forces you to stay away from junk.
I figure I can use all the motivation I can get so I am with you guys!

I LOVE Asics, but man those things last me for NOTHING. I'd be lucky to get three months out of a pair of Asics! But they sure are comfy!

It's not an impossible goal, but you sure will have a STEEP curve ahead of you. One of my running gals, Cat; she went from being a smoker to 26.2 runner in 11 months. Her time was a respectable 4:29:17. But she's only 20 and was a VERY dedicated runner.

NYC is one of the TOUGHEST Marathons, so you better start training for it yesterday... Good luck and feel free to ask questions!

Ran a total on 26 miles last week, of which 5 where hard trail running, and 4 miles were hill repeats.

One of the fast guys, thought me about balancing my body when both uphilling and downhilling on the trail. It was AWESOME.

Also, Crossfit + running are learning to live with me better, translation I'm getting adjusted to it, so I'm not sore all the time.

Most "decent" running shoes aren't going to give you more than 300mi before the foam begins to compress and degrade, and/or the soles begin to fall apart. I've found that the more minimal a shoe is, the better it holds up. Also, your running style is directly correlated to the breakdown of a shoe. If you have proper forefoot/midfoot strike, then it takes a lot of the downward pressure off of the shoe and therefore creates less wear. The only shoe I found that can go longer is the Newton. They are built to put you in proper position and therefore don't wear as much in those areas...BUT, they are $175/pair.

Just a thought, if your shoes are wearing heavily in the heel area then you need to look at your stride. This is an indicator of improper balance and body position. As I mentioned in a previous post...check out the book "Chi Running" by Danny Dreyer. Great for correcting these kinds of things.

Been landing on my toes when road running since February. Funny thing was that whenever I ran barefoot, I always landed on my toes. My Chiropractor here in Cow Town; Who is a multiple NYC/Boston/Chicago Marathon was the one who showed me the error of my ways.

I have been using nothing but Reebok's for the past three years. I get them at the outlet malls. I buy two pairs, which I alternate and I get 7-8 months out of them. Way cheaper and it works for me.

Oh yeah, when trail running I've been using the front half of my feet. Running on your toes when it gets rocky or downhill is a BIATCH, when running on your toes.

I'm getting about 500 miles out of Montrails (these are all trail miles), they actually look damn good after 500 miles (little fraying here and there), but figure I better not push it.

I take my retired pair and put sheet metal screws in them and they become my snow/ice shoes.

Luckily I am not going into it cold. I have done a marathon a year for the last few years and NY will be my third. I have a pretty good base. I am averaging about 30 miles per week in very hot humid weather.

What makes the New York Marathon a tough one? The bridges? The number of runners?

The thing that holds me back is joint pain more than anything else. I am 43 years old 6'2, 195 lbs and only started running in '09.

Never done the NYC (or any 26.2, 13.1er myself), but I have freinds that have. Yeah the bridges and some STEEP street/roads are KILLERS.

Hell I average 25 to 35 on any week, you are making it sound like I could do a full 26.2 (but I won't ;))!

You could do a full. Anybody can, really. If you are willing to accept being slow. It isn't really very good for you though. You end up sacrificing your strength training and beating up your joints. They are a lot of fun though! Everyone should do at least one. It is a nice feeling of accomplishment.

I ran for 28 miles this past week, and I think that until September, I'll cap at 35 or less for the week.

Average speed when flat surface running (12 miles) was 9:10's, which is this OK heat is darn good.

Average speed when trail running was roughly 11:30's or so. I did two 5 mile trail runs (10 miles).

I did 4 miles of hill repeats @ 10:45 splits.

And I did a 2.25 of treadmill "Fartleks".

All this while doing crossfit work outs three times this passed week.

very close in mileage :) 27.2 miles, all trails- averaging just under 12 minutes

my long run on Sat was only 11 miles, still healing the achilles- I stopped ~ every 2 miles and stretched my calves/achilles, seemed to help; also got more trail cleared :D

if all goes well this coming week, I've got a really pretty route picked out (16 miles) for my Saturday run, that should get me pretty close to being on track for the Bridger Run

You may be dehydrated. How about 24 oz of electrolytes 1 hour or two BEFORE running?

PS: I mean "electrolytes" not "Gatorade"! You can make your own, way cheaper/healthier than bought.
