To you it is. To a business trying to make a profit, it is not.

For the City of Wilson, it was and is a huge gamble for the same reasons TWC chose not to compete. Quite a few people seem to think the City's investment was a mistake as well.

The people of Wilson elected the officials who voted to make it illegal. Yeah sure, TWC lobbied liked mofo's to get that vote. So start something and get it overturned. Fund a legal challenge to the law.

I'm not defending anyone but trying to get you to understand why a business makes a decision not to do something. Clearly, you're not listening.

    References please.

Who thought the city's investment was a mistake...?

If TWC doesn't want to compete, then why would they lobby to make 'community internet' illegal? Because they don't want to compete... Think about it - would it be easier to actually compete, or just squash the competition with legal crap? As usual, they choose the legal route because they knew they had a ton of the state legislature in their pockets...

I don't live in NC, I just see a disturbing trend starting... What's to stop the big companies from lobbying this type of internet to be illegal everywhere?

Again, you seem on the side of the business - not the consumer.

I'll have to find some for ya to read. I can't recall exactly where I read about this, it was years ago... T'was either a documentary or a college course, that long ago haha. I just remember it stating large telco's taking huge tax breaks - like AT&T, Qwest, etc.

Now I'm not saying those huge telcos have run NO fiber... I'm just stating for the amount of money the gov't essentially handed them (IIRC 250 BILLION dollars in 1994)... Let's just say we didn't exactly get what we paid for ;).

    These people for one.

Google is your friend. Since you suggested I use Google to find all this out, I'd suggest to you to do the same.

You do realize that cities form "partnerships" with cable companies to supply cable services to their residents. This effectively eliminates competition with respect to cable services.

I said before that I don't support either side. Unlike you though, I am willing to look at both sides of the issue before deciding what my position is.

Large companies have been getting tax breaks forever. That's nothing new and taxpayers have been taking it in the shorts every time too. What else is new?

But if you're going to make the argument that telco's got tax breaks and did nothing then say some of them did something, you might want to check your facts first.

Yes, which is what the City of Wilson originally wanted... We roll the fiber, the cable company provides the service. Although I think they were offering it to more than one cable co... perhaps that's why it failed, the cable companies enjoy their monopolies way too much...

    Yup...

Ok, I just made it all up. You caught me.

Edit - LOL I just read that article too. WiMax better than fiber? You nuts? They can already provide up to 1gbps if you're a business... Yea, WiMax is really better! bwhahahahahaha

    Edit 2 - I would re-read that article if I was you. $34.95/mo for 10up/10down... in 2008!

Edit 3 - found one of the articles finally... I encourage everyone to read it - very disturbing information.

I'm sorry - I'm not going to support the big companies. They continue to record huge profit, and it all goes to a very few. They don't reinvest in their networks, or in their employees. They receive huge tax breaks with the express understanding they would invest in their networks, and it just lines executives pockets. No thanks... I don't support that.

New business model, go war driving, exploit private wireless networks, take snapshots of sensitive data acquired in said war driving, show residents and business owners what I found, make them pay me money to secure their shit.

    Foolproof

Until they take you to court for hacking their network and have your ass thrown in jail or massive fines or both. Most companies aren't to keen on you hacking in.

    test king FTMFW!

Most cert. tests suck ass. They ask you things that aren't very relevant to how good of a tech you really are.

When I was hiring, I didn't pay much attention to certifications. I mean it's nice to see it on the resume but my experience has been that they're not a reliable indicator of skill (in other words, there are many who are good at taking tests but terrible at practical application).

Exactly. I'm only taking my cert tests right now so we can keep/get our partnerships with specific companies. There are key ones that help, but experience trumps all.
