BAD CAT

So ye old check engine light came on and i took it to the dealership to see what it was all about.
They got codes P#0420 and P#0430
Told me that catalytic bank 1&2 need to be replaced as well as exhaust manifold needed to be replaced... Needless to say they were asking $2400 to perform the job..

Anyone gone through this before/ have any suggestions as what to do?
If i have this fixed would it be worth it to do headers and rest of exhaust while they're at it?

They told me I could drive the truck for a long time but wouldn't ever know if the check engine light came on for something else b/c its going to stay on for now.

Any help would be greatly appriciated

Sorry to hear you're having a problem. I'm sure you'll get estimates from other repair shops so it'll be interesting to see if you get the same diagnosis and how much difference in price the other shops quote you. Let us know how this works out and good luck.

 

If you don't need to smog I'd go URD. If you need to smog and need stock parts I'd try and find them online and then have someone other than dealer install them.

I know there are some other guys on here who have had to deal with cats and it seems like it's a hit or miss with aftermarket cats. I'd also check with salvage yards.

 

Thanks, I will definitively follow up on this. I went to the "stealership" to see worst cased scenario. Tomorrow I'm going to a local shop and see if they tell me same and can come up with a better price.

The service manager said that aftermarket parts usually always produce the same check engine light and codes. The two parts alone were $900 and $700 I believe. He wouldn't give me a written estimate. Said "They couldn't do that" But I'll be checking out URD for sure. Do you use any of their parts?

 

Get the part numbers and check with toyota of dallas etc... online. I've received several written quotes from my local dealer, FWIW.

I don't used any URD parts but from what I've read, if I had cause I wouldn't hesitate to do so.

I believe they've got it all worked out to run headers and a y pipe and eliminate all 4 of the cats and then run their 02 simulators so you won't have any codes, they explain it all on their website but you might check with some guys here who know more about that stuff. I'd be willing to bet it'll be much cheaper probably looking at under 1k shipped for URD parts. Either way search around for parts and labor, even if you go with stock parts.

 

Just replace the sensor the upstream sensor cost about 140 and the rear sensor cost about 120 and it's really easy todo

 

What is your year and mileage?

If you can find a shop with a sniffer, see if you can get them to take a reading and compare it to what your sensors are showing. That's the easier way to verify your sensors are working correctly without the cost of replacing them.

From there, if you truly do need new cats, things get a little more complicated.

Ouch. Federal warranties for emissions components cover them for 8/80,000. Mileage gotcha there.

Yeah, start by checking the sensors. If the catalytics is actually toast, then you'll have some deciding to do. You can probably find the cats at a boneyard less expensive than the dealer, but not by a ton. Junkyards know cats are pricey and they price to match.

Aftermarket options are less and less viable as vehicles become more and more emissions stringent. They often only fix the problem for a short period, or don't fix it at all. Be wary of inexpensive solutions.

 

My guess it's the sensor because you said bank one and that's in front of the cats

 

Banks 1 & 2 both came back as needing to be replaced...according to dealer computer read out.. I'll see what I hear tomorrow morning.

Keep an eye out in the BST section for guys that are upgrading headers and getting rid of their old manifolds. Try over on XRU as well.

 

Florida doesn't have emission control tests, so no need to worry about keeping Catalytic converters unless your gonna have to move to Cali. Call Gadget at URD and get your self a nice set up from him, super knowledgeable and friendly. Way cheaper and a lot better performance. Its all bolt on too, not hard to do yourself.

 

Have a shop read the actual voltage readings coming off the sensors and then check the emissions readings compared to what is coming out of the pipe.

I had an old Jeep that started throwing the same codes and the dealer kept telling me the cat-front exhaust system would need replacement. I took it to another shop and had them check the voltages coming off of the O2 sensors and it turned out the sensors were bad.

I think the dealer is trying to take you for a ride. They would rather make $2400 than $300.

 

Spark plug non foulers worked for mine. truck 2005 trd dcsb. 151,xxx miles

what you need

buy 2 boxes of spark plug non foulers from auto zone (biggest ones they have) .(4.99 each box)
1 drill
1/2 titanium drill bit
anti seize

drill through 2 of the non foulers with the drill bit. unplug both 02 sensors from the DOWNSTREAM. put one of each spark plug non fouler( the ones you just drilled though) on your 02 sensors.
then, put the the ones you didnt drill on the bottom of the drilled ones (stacked with the ones you drilled on top). So it will go 02 sensor, drilled, then non drilled. Put on anti seize and the wrench into pipe. DONE. I haven't seen the CEL in 2k miles

Total cost, presuming you have a drill is
18.00 for drill bit (dewault)
11.xx for both spark plug non foulers,
5.00 anti seize

35.00 for a simple, red neck fix ( until you need to pass safety inspection)

when that happens, take them off. Then drive home and put them on. Then go get your emissions done.In VA they dont lift your vehicle to run an OBII test.

 

The upper cats are part of the manifold IIRC
