I've got a situation guys dealing with some tires.

If I go the 255/85-16 route, I'll have a skinnier tire that will weigh less and get better gas mileage than a 285. I would also be running the 255 on my stock rims (with a spacer) so it will stick out the ideal amount (no homo) but going through a local shop to get a 255 (that way I get free rotate and balance) i'm looking at spending around $1050.

If I go the 285/75-16 route, it will be heavy, wider obviously which might look silly since i'll have to run a spacer to make the tires work with my stock rims. Only advantage to these tires that I can see is that going through a local shop, the 285's are about the same amount as the 255's. Another advantage is a wider tire selection since only a hand full of tires are made in the 255 size.

    What should I do guys?

why cant you buy the tires from one place and get them mounted at the place that does free rotate balance? that is what i do.

I never said it would benefit YOU! Hahaha

Well the question I would ask is what are you looking for in a tire? Will you be 4-wheeling? street only? Highway driving mostly?

Do they really get any different MPG? I'd imagine the difference would be slim to none.

I'm not sure if the place that mounts the tires would rotate and balance them for free if i bought the tires off tirerack or something, might have to check into that.

As far as driving goes, I had planned to go with a mud terrain tire, looking at either a bfg km2 or the wrangler mt/r. I want a tire that capable offroad but is still decent enough to be on the road as my truck doesn't see daylight much but when it does it's either on some trails or to the grocery store . I'm just unsure what size to go with for the money.

you may have to pay a few more pennies on the mount/balance to get the lifetime setup but i would def check discount tire first. everytime i have ever looked at tires they killed tireracks prices...... which of course killed the local stores prices.

They actually beat tireracks prices in my situation, tirerack's shipping killed it for me. I guess the main question I'm asking as far as size goes is how silly would a 285 look versus a 255 on my truck since i have to run the wheel spacers either way. The 285 is 1.18 inches wider than the 255.. add the 1.25 inches for the spacer in and i've got a wide ass tire situation going on :notsure:.

Edit, don't think I'll have to run spacers with the 255's but I probably would anyways just to make the tires flush with the flares.. versus the 285's + spacers would make the tire poke out further than my flares. damn.. i hate decisions.

Got a buddy that runs those on his 87 FJ60 and loves them. He runs 35's that are load C's I believe, really pretty soft. They grip great.

Depends on the load range. The ones he's running, yes. They're a C load tire, so they're a good bit softer compound than the E load tire in a 285/75/16, and a little softer than the D load in a 285/70/17. I'd imagine the sidwall ply is thinner too, but not sure.

with a c your sidewall i believe should be an 8 ply (maybe 6??) and with an E should be a 10 or 12 ply sidewall. as far as our tireman here at the plant says. and as most know or can fig out the less ply the sidewall the easier it will flex so softer the ride.

Yup. My BFG AT's are D, and they're kinda stout for every day driving. However, when aired down to like 15 psi for off roading, they feel really nice. In all honesty, the OME springs and shocks f/r, plus the aired down tires, give an amazing overall ride. The tires kinda give you that first bit of small bump plush, then the suspension takes over the rest. I love it.

    Look at build!
I will never go back to a C ply if i plan to use the tire offroad at all unless your just generally trail riding and not on any rocks or roots. My last C load tire got slashed just hopping up onto a rock ledge in a creek when the back end of the truck slid and stopped against another rock in which 2 rotations of the tire against the rocke put a nice hole in the sidewall. Its load E for me frome here on out, ill deal with the somewhat on road stiffness for offroad protection against stuff like that. And C is 6 ply and pretty sure D is 8 and E 10 but may be D 10 and E 12. I know for sure the C's are 6

I would recommend going with the Federal Couragia MT!! 33x12.50x15 $180/tire! That's a VERY popular tire so those usually have the price mark up..

    For yours its $175/tire.. https://www.tiresavings.com/tireShop.php?action=findSKU&sku=321115101
