Slight studer/misfire like rev limiter

03' 3.4l auto. After my last run I noticed on hard acceleration only Im getting a studder or misfire at about 2800-3000 rpm. Drives perfectly fine if not hard on gas. Has 140k on it, probably orig plugs an all. Bought it with 60k....not sure where to start, plugs n wires, dirty mass asiflow sensor

Add that I'm having bad front diff noise.....trucks not happy nor is my bank account.

 

When's the last time you replaced the fuel filter? I'd try that first if its been a while, cheap fix. But with 140,000 and never changing plugs prob wouldn't hurt to have that done anyways.

 

Plugs, Wires, MAF, Fuel Filter, PCV, Air Filter - Do it all and I would use genuine Toyota parts.

Don't forget to check the gap on each of the plugs. I never trust "pre-gapped" plugs...even Toyotas.

What's your timing belt situation?

Havnt had any time to do anything but had 10 mins today to give under hood a look. One of the coil pack bolts or nut that holds it on was very loose......havnt driven it but hope it's the trick

I was going to say, it sounds like something ignition related, especially if all of sudden it just started happening out of the blue and not something that has gradually gotten worse.

If that doesn't do the trick, I'd hook it up and see if it's putting out any codes. While it sounds like it could still use a good tune up , by doing this it could help save yourself some money in order to track down what exactly the problem is rather than throwing parts at it.

 

Any word on what fixed this? I have the same issue now

 

I changed my spark plugs, ones I pulled were pretty bad....


Got new densos, new plug wires from Toyota, new fuel filter, cleaned mass airflow sensor and she ran like a champ!!! All basic and easy to do, took very little time.

Just had in the toyota shop. They told me the water pump is failing and leaking fluid on the timing belt, which caused it to jump a kog or jump out of time by one notch and therefore when it hits a certain rpm the engine begins to miss-fire.

Does this sound as wrong to you as it does to me? When a engine is out of time doesnt it run like crap all the time? I think they are off track there... I think I'll do what you did and see what happens.

If water pump is leaking you might as well do that and timing chain as well....if ur at, around or past 90k miles. I have 140k on mine with orig water pump...

 

If it slips then I think its retarding right? So it should run bad at high RPMs. Someone chime in on this with me I'm not 100% sure.

 

Thanks for the replies yall... Not sure what to do really. I guess I'll pull the timing cover and see if the marks are lined up? Hopefully still visable on the belt.

I havent seen a post anywhere out here on the web saying they had their timing belt jump a cog and causing it to miss at high RPM but the toyota dealer sure thought thats what it was...

Will I need special tools to do the job of the timing belt/water pump? Tools to deal with the pulleys, or tensioners etc... I have no Air impact, I do have a 18.5 volt lithium impact and a corded huge 120 volt impact. I dont think it will fit in there. Gonna need a 250lb tourque wrench?

Ya know better question would be, anyone have a link to the manual for the 2002 model Tacomma?

 

I was having this same issue on a 97 Tacoma 3.4 l. I wasn't getting a check engine light for any code. My problem was intermittently it would hit a rev limiter sometimes at 3500 to 3600 other times it would be around 4400 RPMs. This would go on for about a month or two then my truck would run fine for a couple of months. Had me scratching my head ,been reading all the forums on it. I seen fixes everything from Mass Air sensors, the timing belt, crank pulleys to crank position sensors. I changed out my air flow meter first then I changed out plugs and fuel filter still had the same problem. Finally pulled the crank position sensor and it had grease all over it. Went ahead and bought a new one and replaced it and problem solved. Hope this helps some people out.
