Got my ammo box mounted up last night. If anyone here wants to do this mod let me know and i can get you the unistrut nuts and bolts i used here.

Ill be putting the eye bolt on for a lockable box, and then painting it probably this weekend. Thoughts?

like this, but im going to use a plastic covered lock to stop the rattle trap in the bed of the truck. People were curious about the strength of the box with weight in it. The way mine is mounted i could stand on the thing and not have it move.

I'm interested on where you got them but I want to try to use a button-top bolt so that you can't catch your skin on an edge accidental reaching into it. Yours looks much better than most I've seen that have giant bolts sticking out an inch or two but I still want as smooth & flat a surface as possible.

You just drill another hole in the box itself through one of the slats in the lid clamp. Then run an eye-bolt through that so that it sticks out through the slat in the lid latch and you can then use a padlock to this eye-bolt to lock it when not in use. I suggest a combination lock so you don't have to locate keys to get into them. Same combo for all of them (assuming you have more than one) and you're set. They have ones that have a rubbery cover that will keep them from rattling against the can over bumps. Along the same lines you may want to cut/remove the handles to alleviate rattles since the handles are no longer needed and you may want to put a strip of foam tape across the top on the side that rests against your cab when opened to avoid damage to your cab from opening.

Pro tip: if you insulate the inside you will have an inexpensive Faraday Cage to protect electronics (walkie talkies, CB, etc) in the event if an EMP.

Tanner gun show had ammo cans of all sizes for cheap. Or if you know someone In the army ask them. My brother snagged me a few last time they went to the range.

I went up to the Army Surplus store on Peco's and picked this one up. they call it the saw box, for 5.56mm I had a 50 cal box but its a bit smaller, i like this one much better. I did cut the top handle and front opening handle off to stop that from rattling, and when the box is open it rests against the rubber weather seal on the back window, not the cab. No need for the foam tape, it will never hit the cab of the truck.

Im curious your thoughts about plastic in the box. Especially if you paint it like most people with black paint. These puppies will pull in a lot of heat from the sun so i would assume that things inside could get cookin hot

Depends on which boxes you use and how/where they are mounted. Not everyone is lucky enough to have them rest against the rubber window surround so be careful opening for the first time to see where it's going to hit and some foam tape may be necessary if comes into contact with the cab or window. Just a tip for those looking to do this mod but you lucked out.

I wouldn't use plastic to insulate it. I would use a rubberized foam sheet and cut panels to fit or something similar. I thing having one of them (if I run two which will be likely) set up as a Faraday Cage could be useful and really wouldn't take too much effort to do. It would have the added bonus of cushioning contents inside from bumps and jolts as well as do away with rattling.

I am assuming the box is for tools and tie downs, not electronics. Electronics should probably stay in the cab (my opinion).

Right, and there's nothing to say you couldn't still use them for tools. That doesn't mean you can't keep some el cheap-o walkie talkies, weather radios or other such emergency electronics in it. I'm not saying to keep your expensive smart phone in them but for those who believe in being prepared for just about anything this is an inexpensive and simple step one can take to have a couple more bases covered. If they're bolted to the bed from inside and locked from the outside they're going to be pretty tough to get into and even if they are you're talking about losing a $10 set of walkie talkies & a $10 weather radio. Depending on what tools you own the tools inside will probably be worth more.
