You would have to have a pretty small box to hit the window, it wont ever contact the cab because of the rubber gasket that runs along the window.

I wasnt talking about lining the box in plastic. I was curious as to why you would put radios and plastic parts in the box knowing that they could melt because the box is going to generate a ton of heat.

CSUVIPER is correct, the only thing im going to keep in mine is gloves, ratchet straps, that sort of stuff.

I'm not saying that everyone will have this problem and you clearly are not one of them. It's just a friendly heads up to those considering this as I have read about others who have opened the lid for the first time and put a nice nick in the paint of their cab. You clearly are fine but that doesn't mean everyone else will be. Not sure why we're debating a cautionary post meant for others. It takes an extra half second for those who install these to open it slowly the first time just to see where it will rest.

The box won't get much hotter than your truck does that allows direct sunlight to penetrate through all the windows. A car interior can reach 120-130 degrees in summertime here in Colorado. Melting point of the plastics used on things like 2-way handheld CB's and similar devices is twice that temperature at well over 200 degrees. Not to mention if you put a layer of insulation inside the contents won't be making contact with the sides of the box to directly transfer the radiant heat. Sure it will get warm but not any warmer than your cab on a sunny day. If you're concerned then don't do it. Radar detectors are encased in black plastic and mounted to the windshield so not only do they spend all day every day in 130+ degree temperatures but they also absorb direct UV from sunlight and they still last many years in what is probably the worst conditions possible for electronics.

That's mostly what I'll be putting in mine but a thin foam covering the insides of it will keep the rattling down (both through contact with the box as well as insulating the sound from escaping of parts rattling against themselves) and with the added bonus of acting as a faraday cage for anything electronic you might want to throw in them it's a cheap mod some may be interested in.

Now this is a worthy comment. Very practical for eliminating sounds. Thank you and I will have to do something like this for mine when I install (probably not till the next truck comes along).

Okay, cool. I think I misread what you were saying as borderline argumentative then. I'm about discussing this all too since I'm still in the design phase so any information I can attain from those who have already done this helps in my planning. I'm actually glad to read that your lid hits your rubber surround and hope that mine will do the same and will actually attempt to mount it in such a manner that replicates this but this is a lot more difficult to explain to some who just want to slap boxes in their truck than a simple warning about watching the lids and possible simple solution.

I'm going to mount my ammo cans to my roll bar inside my runner. I need to get two smaller ones that I want to use as mounted dog bowls for my thunder buddy, and bird dog. :)

    These two mutts

I like the idea of adding some padding or insulation. Would cut down on the noise and protect some things I keep in mine like my head lamps.

Hows mikes pup cooper? wasnt someone taking care of him while he is away?

Im going to put the kitchen cabinet liner in my ammo box to stop stuff from sliding around, might even glue some to the sides with super 77.

On a heat note, the outside of the box gets hella hot, the inside of the box actually stays kinda cool so i could see putting radios and stuff in it.
