Make it a lifestyle. What's the point of yo-to diets?

If u diet TOO quick sure, you can lose mass...obviously u limited some carbs which as John said you'll feel weaker-as u are (not in a bad way)

Would you say this was based on lots of reps/volume? I've always liked working antagonist groups
    WO A - Chest/back
    WO B - Legs
    WO C - Shoulders/arms
Wouldn't do more than 50-60 reps in a total workout as strength is my main goal. Might be 5x5 Bench/Pull Ups and a 3x8 Dips/Rows. What do you think of that split?

IMO the isolation work is for guys who already have good mass and are bringing up specific muscles? It's funny to see a 6' 145lb skinny dude in the gym killing his bi's and posterior delts when he cant even bench his BW? I'm not talking shit as I'm a smaller guy too but I primarily do compounds and stick to BW strength as personal preference!

Just to share my recent experience......my work did a biggest loser and I needed to drop a few pounds so I ran 1-3miles 3 times a week and just did max strength BW work......handstand push ups/dips and pull ups/chin ups and no shit I dropped 22lbs and kept all my strength and muscle. Did the zone diet as I'm most familiar with it and it's easy for me. Esentually I ate clean whole foods with good amount of protein and ate 10x my BW (180lbs and ate 1,800 calories)......was hardly ever hungry and it was actually easy! The last week of it I went low carb and hit the sauna a few times and won the competion with 12.5% loss! Now I'm just maintaining and trying to get stronger. I pretty much have a six pack (closer to 5 lol) after not seeing that since I was in high school!

Well I am going into LE, so strength and/or endurance is what I am looking to get into. Albeit, I do need to gain some size at 5'7 140, I'm not the largest individual on the planet lol.

Anyways, what all does the 5x5 routine entail? Is it strictly compound lifts (bench, squat, cleans, etc)? Or do you do additional lifts afterwards to supplement the 5x5?

Sorry if that sounds retarded, just trying to get an idea as to what all is involved, if possible, could ya give a sample routine?

www.stronglifts.com or check out the free app on iTunes.

There is a free book on the site that explains how to do a 5x5 workout.

Also, size has to do 100% with your diet. You have to be supplying your body with more "fuel" than you are using, to gain mass. You cannot simply lift more weight, it doesn't work that way.

I always see this thread and want to be a part of it, but it updates so fast I haven't had a chance, well here I am finally!

A little about me for fun..

I was always "stocky" -said my mom (I was chubby)
    5'8'' tall
after high school, my family told me I had started to look chubbier, I weighed myself and found I was 168lbs, about 15 lbs heavier than I though.

I started working out a bit, and ended up going to texas for fire academy at still 168, but in better shape. after coming back, my metabolism had completely changed, I lost the muscle I had built in texas, and all of the sudden I was a skinny kid, weighing in at 155lbs.

That was about a year ago, I'm now only 152! but I'll show you with pictures that it's a much better 152lbs...

here is my starting point, unhealthy 155lbs

and here is me a week or so ago a healthy 152 lbs
    [IMG]

3 weeks ago I started a bulking program I found on ABC bodybuilding.com which I am loving!

well, that's my intro to the thread!

For whatever reason, when I go to download the free book and put in my email address, it just keeps giving me a loading sign, so as of now I can't view it.

Also, I hear ya on the size and mass thing. I have always had crazy metabolism. Being honest with myself, I do need to start eating better as well. Trying to find a good protein supplement that I like, but I am extremely picky when it comes to such its hard for me to find a good one.

You should get an email that links you to the book.

Honestly, if you are serious about strength gains and want to talk to the people that I got most all of my knowledge from. Join the SL5x5 inner circle. There are tons of people that are in the same spot as you.

You have to realize as well, Sean and the guy above are training completely different from a "strength" routine. Strength trainers are like Olympic lifters, World's Strongest men, and Donny in the video I liked a page back. None of those guys care if they have a six pack or how chiseled their chest is, they just throw weight around.

Yea I hear ya. Honestly, back in high school I was always worried about having the six pack and huge biceps, but as I get closer to a career in law enforcement, I want to be physically fit, in good enough shape to chase down someone if need be, and strong enough to put someone in handcuffs and defend myself as well type of thing...

Also, sorry again if this sounds stupid, but isn't the idea of lifting to gain strength? Whether its a 5x5 workout or another gym workout, isn't the point to get stronger?

Again, sorry if I sound ignorant to the topic, but just trying to understand where ya are coming from.

there isn't really one single reason.

I go to the gym and lift weight to feel good, and look good, I don't have a need to be stronger, like a cop would. but I love the feeling after the gym, and the beach is more fun when you are in good shape :)

"Workouts" could be anything. How you spend your time in and out of the gym is going to determine how strong you are and how you look.

5x5 is just one of the basic methods of strength training. People have spent time to understand how to train your muscles to recover and grow, while continuing to gain strength. SL5x5 has you increasing weight, every work out, 3 times a week.

Sean would be the expert around here on Bodybuilding. It would seem to me that strength would be a side effect in a Bodybuilding routine.
