in the tests I have done, not only is it a dollar or so cheaper to run Priemium (in the length of a full tank, depending on driveing), but the 1GR-FE makes a few more hp and about 12 lb-ft more torque with Priemium fuel.

I run 87 octane in my 08 4x4 DC. Just took a road trip last weekend and got 20.1 MPG driving an average of 75 MPH on the highway.

From an octane standpoint everything I have read suggests that unless the manufacturer recommends a higher octane you are wasting your money.

My owners manual states "For best performance, use Priemium fuel". Given that the FJ is the sme engine with the same UCU programming, and it says "Use Priemium fuel", I figured it cant hurt. Out here, its only $0.20 difference from 87 to 91, so an extra $2.50 or so per fill up. Also, I have found this online in many places:

The 1GR-FE is the 4.0 L version. Bore is 94 mm and stroke is 95 mm. Output is 236 hp (176 kW) at 5200 rpm with 266 lb·ft (361 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm on 87 octane, and 239 hp (178 kW) at 5200 rpm with 278 lb·ft (377 N·m) at 3700 rpm on 91 octane. This engine features Toyota's VVT-i system on the intake cam and a compression ratio of 10.0:1. Inside, the 1GR uses a taper-squish combustion chamber design with matching pistons to improve anti-knocking and engine performance, while also improving intake and fuel efficiency. Toyota adopted a siamese-type intake port, which reduces the surface area of the port walls and prevents fuel from adhering to such walls. This engine has special cast-iron cylinder liners cast into the block, which are a spiny type to improve adhesion between the liner and cylinder block. With these special thin liners it is impossible to bore the block. In the event of cylinder wall damage (scoring, deep protrusions, etc), the entire cylinder block must be replaced. For increased block rigidity, the 1GR also receives a high temperature plastic insulator/protector, which fills the empty space between the outer portion of the cylinders and block material common to open deck engines. For increased cooling efficiency, the 1GR employs water passages between the bores of the engine. There are such two passages for each bank for a total of four. This reduces cylinder hot-spotting and keeps combustion chamber temperatures more uniform.

    Manual recommends 87.....

The only time I run something higher is if I'm gonna do a lot of hauling, or if I'm going on a long highway trip with a lot of mountains.

I use 87 in the city. I get about 22-24 MPG. When I head home to N. Arizona I use 91, get about 25-27 MPG. I drive about 5 MPH over the speed limit.

87 in my 07 Prerunner 4cyl. I get about 22MPG consistently. It's got the suspension TSB so it sits a little higher. Overall...no problems with 87. I've even pulled the ski boat with 87 and no problems there either.

I have tried all Octanes on my 06 Tacoma and have 40,000 miles of testing. The 87 sucks in the 4.0 L engine, in my opinion and the way I like to drive, which is hard. I like to accelerate hard and get up to speed, I have found 89 and 91 perform almost the same. If I use 87 I can make the engine ping under heavy acceleration, which is not good. So, I have chosen to stick with 89 octane fuel for now, unless I am going to be pulling the boat which weighs around 5,000 lbs and then I will put the 91 octane in. JMHO

If you can find 100% gas at 87 run that for best bang for the buck IMHO. If you have to get the premium (BP) 91+ for 100% gas that is again better bang for the almighty dollar vs the Ethanol blend crap

I wish, here in NH all gas has 10% ethanol. I've always ran 87 octane in my truck. Sure you may be able to get 3HP more, but will you notice that? IMO if it runs fine on 87, I'm sticking with it.

Actually, you do notice the 12 lb-ft of torque. My truck, when useing 91, is much more "Peppy" off the line, and near the top end.

I guess I'll have to give it a try and use 91/93 the next few fill-ups.

    +1 I'll add...

Here's an easy way I see a diff w/ a 6spd. Level ground, radio off. At only 40 in 6th. Punch it. Try with regular, try with premium.

I'm sure this has been asked several times, but how many tanks does it usually take to see a difference between regular and premium, or do you notice it on the first premium fill-up?

Seems to me that 2 tanks are what it takes to notice a diff in performance.
