Last night, I was talking on the phone and screwing with some Rail Road ties, and managed to get 2 splinters under the fingernail of my index finger. Yes.....it hurts. I belive I got 1 out, and I had to dig for the other one useing a needle. I got most of it out, but blood started obstructing my view, so I had to stop the search for the rest of the splinter. Also, the pain was causeing my vission to be reduced. I soaked my finger in rubbing alcohol for a while, and called it good. WELL, in the past I have injured myself in just about every way, but I have never had this happen. My Mom and Dad were saying that its gonna get infected. I had a dream last night that my arm fell off. Now then.....The finger is not swollen to bad, but it hurts a little bit still. Not sure if the pain is from my wild digging into it with a needle, or because there may be a little peice of wood still in there. SO, some questions:
If there is still a peice of wood in there, will it come closer to the surface, or come out on its own?
Will it become infected and cause parts of my body to fall off?
    Will I die?

    Thanks.

Isn't the resident Medic the same guy who pulled the wrong "plug" and put "vital" fluids in the wrong "orifice"?

You may want to head to the local Walk-in Clinic a.k.a., Medical Hobby Shop.

If it is still in there it can do one of a few things...it can stay there and be absorbed, it can get pushed out without infection, or it can get infected and you'll have to get it taken care of.

I had a splinter that grew into the side of my finger- Turned into brown spot and then went away.

I hope you don't die Chris...Do keep an eye on it tho...

Well, She was looking at me when I was trying to dig the splinter out. After I started to bleed pretty good, she THEN asked if she could "Help". I just looked at her as I didnt quite know if she just wanted to make me bleed more.

Well....I guess we'll see. If I die from a fucking splinter, Im gonna be pissed.

when I was speed reading through your post, for some reason I got it in my head that you were using a cut off wheel on a Dremel to clean it out.

Soaking your finger in alcohol was a good idea. Keep an eye out for puss and inflammation. If you don't get either one of those, just relax and start washing your hands after you go to the bathroom. I bet the splinter will grow out with your fingernail. You could probably cut the fingernail pretty short over the next few days and that might help speed it out.

and......I think you'd want to be even more concerned about the creosote used to treat the RR ties. I'm sure that could kill you while you napped.....still,... what's the chances?

Yes it will come to the surface over time, a week or so. There is a very real chance of infection. Lets see, what could be on a railroad tie, oil, dirt, chemicals for treating the wood, hobo urine. Go get it checked out.
