Taco ever leave you stranded? (2nd gen)

I've owned 2 tacos and my 06 had around 80k miles when I sold it but one day I went to a job interview and I was running late in my 06, parked, went in, nailed the interview, came outside tried to start her up and the battery took a shit on me. It was ok b/c it was just a battery but I was about 20 miles from an auto parts store. Anyone have a similar story? Thoughts?,

 

Yeah alternator crapped out on me bout 99 miles from home. Thank god for AAA

 

^ ah-men for that. I hate to ask for help but when I need it I need it, they saved my ass one time in my old ford ranger.. I kind of miss having a 5 speed, the battery dies or alternator craps out you can push start & pop the clutch.

No, but the crappy old Dunlops nearly made it happen once though. Was coming home from a riding outing with a buddy, and noticed the TPMS light lit up, so thinking I just had a low tire, I kept driving til we made it home. We were about 20 miles from home, but once I got home I discovered my right rear was leaking air, a small pebbled had lodged between the treads and actually punctured a hole! What crappy tires, upgraded to 10 ply Wrangler Silent Armors and never looked back.

 

I have owned 10 Toyota Vehicles and none have ever stranded me.

Don't even ask about the chryslers and fords I have owned. They all sucked ).

 

Batteries have let me down, as have flat tires...but no Tacoma (or Toyota Pickup prior that) never has. I don't consider battery or tire failure as a fault against the vehicle manufacturer, especially if it was a battery I put in.

OK, so I know it doesn't count if you keep getting new ones. Now I just wear the tires and battery down and get a new one before something goes wrong. But I drove the hell out of the 72 and 92. Restoring a 77 Celica now for my daughter.

 

Put over 100k on my first Tacoma ('06) Never a problem. I trust my "new" '10 will treat me the same.

 

I hear you on that, I guess I was looking to see if someone had a catastrophic engine / tranny failure.

 

Only catastrophic meetings with other solid objects for me. I was crushed (emotionally, not physically) when my 04 (last of the 1st gens) was demolished by a drunk lady while I was sitting at a light.

My dad threw a timing chain on a 76 (I think) Corolla that had 200K+ miles on it, and it was catstrophic for the yellow turd's motor. His fault for bad maintenance. My wife's hairdresser has a 03 Celica that had a manual transmission blow up, but it had been wrecked and not fixed correctly. Other than that, I have never even heard of a catstrophic mechanical failure of any Toyota.

 

Nope.

Mine did fail to start one time. I was literally in the middle of nowhere when it happened. For some reason, I cycled the key back off, counted to ten, then cycled it back to ON, gave it another few seconds, cranked it over, it ran fine for over 1,000 miles back to my home. Never happened again. Weird, scary stuff.

My 1986 Toyota pretty much fell apart all around me, but I never had to walk, it always made it home. Sometimes it was hundreds of miles I had to limp home with a failing transmission, radiator, rear end, etc. It failed to start once, I got out and hit the starter with a hammer, then drove home.

My general rule is that if any vehicle causes me to walk, I will sell it immediately. Hasn't happened yet.

 

My old 89 4runner left me stranded once, about 1 mile from home. No way I was pushing it across a main busy highway to get home.. Waited 2 hours for AAA to pick me up. 2 other times, rocker arm was broken, but I could limp it home. Even with the battery going dead every few days, brake master cylinder on its last legs, and the engine caught fire(my fault), it only left me stranded once, and that turned out to be a bad main plug wire. I drove the shit out of that truck..still miss it. My 96, and now 05 never left me stranded. The starter started going out on my 96, but still started when I wanted it to. That truck even got me home after the accident that totaled it, started up and drove the bitch home .My 05, well its still new to me.

 

Toyota - not me personally. Closest I came to needing an alternate ride was a rainstorm that turned into a wicked icing snowstorm. I was in my pop's '99 taco. Everyone was sliding all over, going round and round and round in whatever direction gravity took them. I pulled over and up into a driveway to give those 50+ cars all the space they needed for their ditch party, and when the cops finally blocked the road so the quadruped disco dancing could stop, I just started up and drove home. The only spooky part was needing to back farther and farther up that drive to avoid the dumbbells -- because on the road, I never lost traction. Man I miss that truck. I swear it could have climbed a tree should the need have arisen.

It did leave my dad stranded as its final act - when Toyota wouldn't let him drive it home because their hammer went through the frame.

Ford - yes, starter failure. Technically the two instances the driver's side window motor burned out in the DOWN POSITION before a rainstorm on the F150 and the wipers only failing to work during heavy rainfall on the F250 didn't leave me stranded.

Honda - yes, the remnants of hurricane ike took out my distributor and my sisters PCM on the same night (both civics). I was ticked off - it was 4 days before the Fit I'd reserved came off the truck and I got to trade it with a new $250 dizzy. Technically it was just an ignitor failure, what used to be a $15 part, but guess what Honda nor auto parts store didn't sell separately anymore. I was able to find the PCM for $70 though
