    i can see why you'd want to limit it most everywhere, otherwise it would detract from staying on topic, a pleasant discourse, etc... i understand that, ..i do think it's possible to give a place for the muckrakers to go, ...a subforum for "politics", ...rules are stated or in some way implied that the muckracking only allowed in that area, and that area only... ...seems to work on other forums, including car/truck themed forums... just my 0.02..

    Why bother opening the door for confusion and bad blood-because no matter what the rules say-People will still be people and the end result is folks getting banned and/or members getting into long standing fights, that usually get someone banned. Not to mention the number of folks who follow the rules in other sections-IE-B/S/T posts and 2nd Gen off topic threads.

    It's been proven time and time and time again that political threads do NOT remain polite and there is no purpose to creating an area for insults and arguing about a topic that few folks will have a revelation about over the Internet. Don't expect it to change any time soon as the staff on THIS site don't want to deal with it.

    i see... but i believe in punishing troublemakers,... but not the whole class... i think that's where my perspective is a bit different... some of the things you're concerned about are things i see all the time on threads mainly in the "off topic" areas anyway....

    You are right-We do look at it different.
    1) No politics is not a punishment-You are welcome to talk about politics somewhere else and it heads off issues that happened without fail before the rule was out in place.
    2) Insults and issues do not happen all the time and when they do-They are dealt with. The staff is not omniscient, some things happen while we sleep or are at work or with our families, so things get by us-But not often. Political threads being verboten lessens our workload and does not hinder the site in the least.

    Since virtually everything is related to politics at some level in this great democracy, it's not always so easy (even in a truck forum) to completely avoid politics. For example, how do we faithfully avoid mentioning state or federal environmental laws or actions impacting our trucks, government regulation of gas consumption, speed limit laws, seatbelt laws, and so on?

    Even seemingly entirely unrelated subjects can relate to this forum in some vague manner. For example, Americans cannot buy trucks if they don't have enough money. Since the cost of Obamacare will take additional money out of the hands of many Americans, hurting their individual financial situations, one likely result is a further reduction in the number of trucks and/or truck accessories sold.

    I could probably go on listing many other topics (gun laws in the gun forum, etc), but I think you get the idea.

    You're trying a bit too hard, but I'll humor you. You can approach it like so:

    I want to buy more stuff for my truck but my family's health is my primary concern. Currently, it costs me $1200 per month for medical coverage out of my pocket, with my employer kicking in an additional XX% on top of that. Does anybody have a suggestion of different insurance companies or alternate insurance options that would free up money for bigger Monster stickers?

    As laws do have some tenious connection to everyone, you are right you may have to mention a law or a gov't regulation to have a discussion about many of the things discussed regularly here.
    That does not require a discussion about liberals versus conservatives or about how stupid a particular politician/stance is. The prohibition is meant to control blatently political posts (ie: ones titled "Obamacare"), not stifle all disucssion of everything that might have a law related to it.

    Not for anything, but why weren't you railing against Medicare and Medicaid yesterday? Or today, for that matter?

    Will you also complain about the government subsidy that makes it possible for citizens to deduct medical insurance expenses pre-tax? That too is a hand-out, as is the mortgage interest deduction. Ultimately, they too take money out of the pockets of Tacoma owners that want bigger tires.

    Knee-jerk reactions, blind anger, and absolute us-vs.-them attitudes are unfortunately what keep politics from being discussed on the site. Freedom, conversations, and compromise are not zero-sum, but the belief that they are leads to a confrontational approach to the subject of politics and does not benefit the TW community.
