Newb with questions

I've never owned a tacoma before, but I'm looking to possibly buy a 1st gen 4 cylinder tacoma with a 2.4L and a 5spd. I'm debating whether or not to get a 2wd or 4wd. I'll be commuting in this so gas mileage is a priority for me. Does anyone out there have real world mpg for a single cab 4wd 5spd with a 2.4 L ?? I've searched and found a lot of info on the 2wd 2.4L and the 4wd 2.7L but nothing has come up w/ the combination I'm looking at. Any info would be appreciated.

 

I dont know much bout the mileage numbers on the 4 bangers but do u plan on offroading or using 4wd?

 

No offroading. I work in the high country so I'll need 4wd for the snow in the winter time and mild mud on the fire roads, but that is the extent of my 4wd use.

 

I would definately get the 4x4. It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. I have a 2000 3.4L TRD 4x4 and love it. I only get about 16-17 mpg average but I am jacked up 6 inches and on 33x12.50 tires. My buddy has a 98 2.7L 4x4 and his is jacked up to on 33's. I think he gets about 15-17 mpg. The reason his is low is because the 2.7L has a little load on it with the 33's with STOCK gearing. But, the 2.7L motor is reliable as hell and never let him down. My V6 has never let me down either(knock on wood), and him and I drive our yotas very very hard, especially in hunting season. You can't go wrong with the 2.7 or the 3.4, but if you are worried about gas mileage, KEEP IT STOCK... don't jack it up unless you plan on gearing lower. I'm guessing you will get around 20 mpg with a stock 2.7 motor. Hope this helps.

 

As a second gen owner, I am willing to say the first gen is a better build vehicle. If you have any question whether or not to get a 4x4 i would definitely get it. If you get bailled out even once for having it, then you have justified your decision

 

I have had two different 95's. Awesome trucks! I wouldn't think a V-6 would be much more. The 4 bangers are solid though.

 

Are you saying you are looking for a 4wd 2.4l because only the 2wd models came with the 2.4 and 4wd models and the prerunner came with the 2.7 and the 3.4. From what I've heard the 2.7 4wds got pretty good gas mileage.

Someone had a '98 single cab 4wd 2.4l for sale on CL. After I called him and asked if it really had a 2.4L, he said he didn't know. I'm assuming now that its a 2.7L.

 

I had a 98 4x4 2.7 and i got 20-21 mpg. Go with the 4x4.
