cb ground plane

i just got a cb with antenna for free from my uncle and im trying to figure out where to mount my antenna i would really like it to be on my rollbar (which isnt made yet) so since it would be mounted on a 1 1/2 inch tube directly behind the cab would i have to get a firestik with the no ground plane kit?

 

If your roll bar is connected to the frame or metal box you could use anything

 

ok thanks itll be connected to the bed but i wont scrape off the bedliner so ill get a ngp antenna

 

What is the antenna you have now? NGP antennas aren't the best performers.

 

As long as you get contact with metal through the box you would be better off with a regular antenna.

 

im not sure but it looks like the original 3ft firestik , it might be ngp as it was mounted on a motorhomes roof

whip vs fiberglass antenna. is there a range difference? can i use a whip when its end is pulled into the bed like the hummm v's?

 

A steel whip will outperform a fiberglass antenna. It's a full 1/4 wave in one straight piece as apposed to 102 inches of wire wrapped around a fiberglass rod. It will work bent over, but for max performance let it stand up straight.

 

If I was you I would get a flexible Wilson antenna or similar. A 102 inch whip is good but your always banging on stuff like drive throughs low trees etc. Look at this link the ones at the bottom of the page.

I mounted mine here with a regular firestick due to my fiberglass cap. Am I in need of a NGP antenna. My swr is good, but I always get a lot of noise from other radios. I think my transmision is good (not really tested).

 

ok i think ill try that. where i was going to mount the whip would be directly above the 3rd brake light, but would it hurt if i mounted it drivers side a couple inches off of the bed so i can clear almost anything with the whip bent?

 

no problem, awesome mount location, if i was gonna keep my shell i might have done something like that.

 

Where did you get the mounting bracket?

 

You're talking over 8 feet of antenna, so I don't know if I would mount it on the roof. Maybe off a bed rail or off the rear bumper so you can bend it down and hook it near the cab.

oh yeah, didnt think about that, i know ive seen one one someones build thread,maybe saundermanns ? it was super clean looking.whats a good brand of coax? are there any tuneable whips?

 

Anything but mini 8 will be fine for coax. Whips are broadband and don't really need any tuning. I believe you need the 6 inch barrel spring to make it a true 1/4 wave though.
