factory 2010 radio no am reception

what are the most common things for the am radio to go out. i have factory 2010 dc offroad trd radio with cd changer i searched but didnt find a tread for it. thanks for the info.

 

There is a few things that can affect AM reception. First and foremost is the way the antenna is mounted on the fender. At the base of the antenna it must bite into the underside of the fender to get a good ground plane.

Most commonly I have encountered this on vehicles that were recently painted or had collision repair. It's not uncommon for the body shop to remove the antenna, paint the fender, some of the paint gets through the hole, then when the antenna is re-mounted it does not ground properly.

This can also be a sign of a bad antenna coax. Specifically the outer shield of the cable. AM does depend on getting the signal on the center conductor of the cable and the outer shield of the cable.

This could also be a sign of a bad radio, but if you are still receiving FM the chances of this are unlikely.

thanks ill start digging. an other note is that i hear engine noise sometimes also. would that point more towards bad antenna grounding?

 

Yes it most certainly does, this generally indicates a bad antenna ground as well!

had ghost flames painted . they broke the antenna nut getting it off so i put a washer and used the nut as a bushing.and screwed the antenna back on. it has a ground wire at the bottom of the mast. does it still need the ground at the finder?

 

We use it for continuous news and sports.
